Look at the source where phonescoop got it's info, from Apple of all places, read this:

In a report to clients issued a few hours before Apple’s announcement, Munster had estimated that Apple had sold about 450,000 iPhones worldwide and that it would take Apple at least 17 days to hit the one million mark.

One explanation for the discrepancy may have to do with how Apple counts sales. Sales at Apple Stores are recorded at the register. But sales to its partners — in this case, AT&T and the overseas carriers — are recorded when the devices leave the loading docks in Asia. In other words, some of those 1 million iPhones recorded as sold by Apple (AAPL) may still be in transit.

Well according to apple they did sell 1 million iphones. The story says that they count the ones sent to at&t and over-sea carriers as already sold.

Yeah exactly, according to Apple 🙄

If half a million still haven't been activated yet, how in the hell can they be included as sold to customers? 😉

it says sold, not sold to customers. Apple has sold one million iPhones, but AT&T have yet to RESELL the ones they bought.

Dude, you really have it in for Apple. Phone manufacturers have ALWAYS measured their sales by what is sold to carriers. They didn't say one million phones have been activated.

That's common practice in mutlitple industries and isn't a surprise to anyone. Companies like Sony and Microsoft do it all the time in an effort to massage the numbers. Units shipped are considered as Units sold and that way they can make it look great for marketing, or to hide a softness in sales that they maintain isn't there(think Xbox 360 and PS3).

Oh Yeah.....????????

I worked for a "Major" Software Company about 5 years ago, whose CEO is now IN JAIL for some "funky accounting practices that the FBI & Securities & Exchange Commissions didn't find ALL THAT COMMON...............

Funny thing..............those accounting practices sound A LOT like what you're describing...........

He was 1 of 5 making 600+ million a year!!!!!!

Go figure!!!!!!

The difference being that this is marketing, not accounting. Now, if Apple sold 1 Million, but only claimed to sell 100,000 for balance sheet purposes, that would be criminal.
