I mean, how long have they known about this? When VZW decomissioned their analog towers, they sent letters out basically to the tune of "move it or lose it" saying after such-and-such a date, they would no longer support analog devices or plans, and that they were eligible for a free or discounted phone. If the customer did nothing, their service would be shut off.
I don't see why Sprint can't do the same thing.
...
this is not for their analog services. sprint did the same thing every carrier did and warned about disconnects, offered discounts, then cut phones.
this is for spectrum that is close or blended with public safety frequencies such as emergency response and police agencies.
Sprint made an agreement i believe two years ago to vacate this frequency block in exchange for 1900MHZ and some nextel frequencies/contracts. They've continued to delay due to the massive logistics of the change.
...
What happens if they don't meet the deadline? Fines, I'm guessing. But will there also be any other measures taken?
...
nah, probably not even fines at this point.
...
Does this have anything to do with the IDEN network??
...
This is 100% about the IDEN network.
...
So basically Sprint needs more time to transfer nextel completely over to cdma push to talk
...
no. iden users will still be iden. what the goverment wants from sprint is to switch its iden users to the 1900 spectrum. the problem is that the 1900 spectrum that the goverment is offering is still being used by some goverment agencies and those agencies doesn't have any deadlines compared to sprint.
...
The original agreement was fines, but who knows. Probably the deadline will be extended.
...
I think a major par tof the issue is that the govt. has yet to give them much of the 1900 spectrum they said they would... so Sprint has yet to give up the spectrum they negotiated over.
...
That's pretty much it. I was under the impression that Sprint was being given "replacement" frequencies to migrate to, but that these replacements were currently being used. Until they're vacated, Sprint can't migrate to them. And with the FCC basically saying "tough luck, get out" with their current problem stuff, Sprint can stand to lose a HUGE amount of capacity if they really are forced out before their replacement stuff is ready.
