should be the same. same applies to any data package - there is no difference between the price of EDGE vs UMTS

It depends on a number of factors but usually yes, it should go up in price points, especially when AT&T is subsidizing now the new device to make it cheaper for people to afford the device.

Subsidizing would have nothing to do with data prices, and going from edge to 3G would have no factor either. especially when the whole country isn't 3G. There is no way for the network to tell how to bill people just because they're 3G or edge. Phones like the BlackJack and Blackberries are subsidized a lot more than the iPhones will be. The difference is now when people buy one as an upgrade it will extend their contract for 24 months. The original iPhone would not cause customers contracts to be extended.

Actually subsidizing does in fact impact price points because AT&T loses money up front on each one. Of course, they would make it up on the life of the product plus with data plans subtracted by the cut that Apple takes but yes, it is impacted. And yes, different technologies do affect price points. The Blackberry and other Smartphone devices have their own data plans.

If data speeds effected data prices then AT&T would charge different monthly charges for a 2G razr over a 3G razr??? No of course not. And they sure wont charge different data plan price points for people who live/buy a new iPhone in a 3G market compared to a 2G market. I would assume that the subsidizing on this model has more to do with a more competitive market since the original launched. (not the only "new & cool" slim touch screen phone out there anymore) Again, why they will make customers buy it out right or extend their contracts like any other phone.

Of course, yes. look at the recent changes they have increased the data speeds. look at other 2.5g data cards and internet on devices and then look at the 3G+ they are different.

I wouldn't exactly call Engadget's "tidbits" gospel on this one. Four year contract? It doesn't happen. I will wait for word from AT&T before I bite on anything involving changes to the data plan structure for the iPhone though I admit the figures shown on Engadget are in line with data plan pricing for AT&T PDAs and Blackberry devices.

On AT&T unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, on top of voice plans starting at $39.99 a month. Unlimited 3G data for business users will be $45 a month, on top of voice. No word on how many text messages they're tossing in for that price. There's a minimum two-year agreement, but we're not positive what that'll look like for those currently enslaved to an AT&T contract -- you could be looking at a solid four years of time if you just took the plunge

The data is right. If you are in a term now, they will let you out with no fee. Just need a new 2 year agree. Chat online and talked to a local store, both say the same thing. I have a smartphone now, and the price for our family account will not change they told me. BUT, they did not know if I would have the 1500 text that I have now.

AT&T Announces New iPhone Plan Pricing
Today, 4:36 PM by Eric M. Zeman

AT&T has altered the pricing of unlimited data plans for the 3G iPhone. Customers who purchase a new iPhone on July 11 will have to pay $30 per month for unlimited data, which is $10 more per month than what current iPhone owners pay. Over the course of a standard 2-year agreement, 3G iPhone owners will end up paying $40 more for the device and data services than the current generation iPhone. 3G iPhone business users will pay $45 per month. The 3G iPhone will, however, be able to access AT&T's higher-speed 3G network, which the current iPhone cannot.
