The FCC is threatening to shut down major parts of Sprint's iDEN network as portions of the 800 MHz spectrum it operates in interferes with public safety channels. The conflict between the iDEN network and public safety agencies was addressed years ago as Sprint was given new spectrum to move its iDEN network onto. Though the carrier has already spent $1 billion to move the network, the FCC says that progress is not moving according to schedule. Well, really, this should be a time for Sprint to abandon the iDEN network altogether. That network is so horrible, it's not even funny. The fact that they have mass exoduses of people vacating that network should show them that something's wrong. Just shut down the iDEN network and give all the people QChat phones.
Actually, Sprint has invested quite a bit of $$$ into the iDEN network, and improved coverage to boot. iDEN is now the second largest wireless network in the U.S.
Nextel's network had the second fewest FCC complaints filed against it, of any national carrier, prior to the merger: a time when their network was WAY below what it is now.
