they already sell multiple carriers side by side. Didn't they also start stand-alone wireless kiosks or something too?

They've been doing it for awhile now...I don't get this new acquisition. I'm going to apply to a best buy soon, after working at one a couple of years ago. This news is mildly confusing. Best Buy said something about stand alone stores, but re-branded them. They weren't "best buy wireless" stand alone, but called something else. Odd news.

Its sounds like the same reason Sam's Club and Costco don't own their kiosks. It removes the responsibility from their employees and somebody is staffed their full time.

Circuit City does that with Verizon. Verizon wireless pays them rent to be in their stores and the only agreement is that Circuit City can not sell another carrier.

The people who work there do not work for C.C. and vice versa.

"Best Buy Mobile" is tagged to Carphone Ware house out of England. They're a concept of a store with-in a store similar to Best Buy's Magnolia Home Theater section, and even the Geek Squad. It is still owned and operated by Best Buy, but Carphone Warehouse has their hands in the operations because they're the main supplier. They have already opened some stand alone stores in the NYC market. However, essentially it is going to be like their regular wireless department but they'll have more services to offer, different uniforms, better accessories, and they're offering Unlocked phones. Plus they're taking care of their own repairs instead of sending the customer to the carrier's official stores, and offering loaner phones, whether or not their...

My understanding is that they are going to sell ALL carriers. Additionally, Best Buy employees have a long-standing tradition of not being on commission. As a result, they have lost alot of marketshare by not getting deep into phones. If they were to have a bunch of commissioned sales people (this venture), then they would make alot more money in a very profitable and still growing sector. Also, from what I understand of Carphone Warehouse, they are HUGE in Europe. I have even heard some rumors of them carrying unlocked phones... this would really make for an interesting change.

Yeah I think this is a win-win for [gsm] consumers as you might be able to get top of the line phones without having to wait 6 months to a year for them to show up on your carrier, if even at all or go buy the off ebay and at minimum losing any level of customer support [which you may now get from carphone warehouse].

A little surprised best buy is interested here, thought they were more tied to the carriers interest then the customers...

I'm excited.

I think this is fantastic, BB's cellphone area looks chaotic with different brands all over the place, with some unlocked stuff. The do have a decent accessory shelf, but, a tad over priced.

Carphone Warehouse will add structure and choice, especially in the unlocked GSM market. So far Nokia and HTC has taken steps to sell their phones unlocked and unbranded into the U.S. (and probably Canadian) market.

I know in the U.K. Carphone Warehouse can along with O2 sell iPhones.

Unless you have some kind of intimate knowledge of this... EVERYTHING I have heard is the oppposite. I work in a different retail channel that will compete with this, and my higher ups and myself have all heard it will be 3rd party employees. Although they may be employed by BB, they will be on a different pay scale. If they are not, this WILL fail.

Ur Opposite Knowledge of this is just a little off It will not be or should I say "it is not 3rd party employees" . They are BBy employees and it is not failing.
