And yes, some GSM phones are capable of being used on various providers, but not all functions are guaranteed to work. So while VZW may not have this ability, it will be nice knowing that all the features of a phone I purchase will work correctly.
It's also about more than just phones. Your car could connect for service bulletins or to update it's navigational software. With so many possibilities, this is a really exciting direction for the wireless indus...

Not 100% pointless. Certainly when VZW made the announcement in light of Sprint's losing its lawsuit, we all thought that we would be able to take our Katanas and Hues and Centros and all into a Verizon store and walk out with them on VZW plans. This probably won't happen, at least for a little while.
With the whole process (submit your device to VZW, have it tested for 8 weeks, pay ...
