I don't know if the carrier model is totally a dying breed. With 60 million customers for VZW and even more with ATT, the carriers will be around for quite awhile. However, where things are really at now is data, and with data comes software. I just don't see the big carriers as being relevant software developers. Not when Google and Microsoft are in the mix too.
