So does anyone know what the iPhone SDK actually is? Is it the new iPhone or a software upgrade?

It's for third parties to actually create native programs for the iPhone. Similar to all the programs you can add now on a jailbroken phone, but sanctioned by Apple (and likely needing to go through iTunes to sell apps and giving Apple a cut of the revenue).

I doubt you will have to go through iTunes to get the programs. I'm sure there will be plenty of free apps just like there is now. Why be mad at people who want to make a buck by selling their product, you would do the same.
