Verizon and AT&T

Verizon announced their unlimited plans today and a few hours later AT&T announces theirs. People say it's a game of following the leader but AT&T didn't follow Verizon. These announcements are only a few hours apart and to think that AT&T did this just because Verizon did is ridiculous. Cell phone companies don't react to the competition that quickly especially over a rate plan. I guarantee you both VZW and AT&T were planning on doing this today and this is just a coincidence.

Remember, these plans aren't going into effect until a little later on this month...

I won't hold my breath on the PDA/Smartphone plans yet. Just got a Q, and until I see a difinitive price for that; I won't bother...

Here is the easy answer.

Simply change your rate plan. Their data portions (per their press release) are not changed. If you are on the proper plan for your Q (PDA plan) you have the same package.

Good luck.

P.S. This is the reason I posted. The AT&T press release by itself was very simple and designed to be that way. Eric fouled it up by intermixing his interpretation of what AT&T was doing and Verizon was doing. VERIZON chose to have specific plans for specific devices. AT&T simply chose to have a new rate for voice usage, period. Features available remain the same.

Thank you. Hopefully that may clear up any questions others have if they have PDA/BlackBerry devices as well...

I'm strongly debating on ridding myself of the landline at the house. Problem is, its tied to the DSL, and I'm not quite doing enough cell calling to justify the jump to the unlimited just yet; but a VERY fesable decision in the near future.

My data plan (PDA personal/unlimited text) are staying frozen as long as I own this phone. Unless I read any release otherwise, I'll just have to assume this is all true...

Once again, thank you for the reply. Hopefully this will rest the rest of the flamers aboard here; though it isn't likely...

if you have at&t dsl you can drop the land line and get dsl direct. i think it's 5 dollars more but you don't need the land line. also if you look at the price for your cell phone and the price of your land line, the unlimited plan is probably cheaper at 99.99 than those 2 together.

FYI Verizon does offer unlimeted calling plans for PDA phones. For unlimited minutes messaging and email/internet it is 149.99 plus tax. Or you can go for just unlimited emial and minutes for 129.99. 🙂

Hate to say it but I have to agree. This is definitely a "me too" situation though I would think that somebody at T-Mo and AT&T had to see this one coming. Credit them with reacting fairly quickly though.

As far as "promo'n the hell out of it" I think that AT&T and T-Mo can ride the wave on this one. Let VZW spend the money on the hoopla and the rest can benefit from the awareness it raises.

Who cares who had it first, the only thing is it may benefit those who need it. Follow the leader is nothing new in any industry.

Like someone mentioned, all of these three carriers knew about this a looooooooong time ago. There are a lot of people with a lot of insider information going around the executives of all of carriers in the United States.

Yeah I agree, it leaked out onto message boards as early as saturday, you can bet AT&T execs were scrambling for a press announcement to say "Me too", but that's typical, because they followed us with prorated ETF, and unlimited texting, as well as the fact that we passed on doing the Iphone. They really are kinda just taking our scraps, that fall off the table. Got to give them credit for reacting so quickly though. But it just makes them look like they are always one step behind us.

Funny how people always want to say "we" did it, like they had a hand in the decision.
"scraps"????
Verizon didn't pass on the iPhone, the two parties couldn't agree on network issues. Verizon wanted EVDO radios in the phone because they new 1xrtt sucked too bad but apple would of then have to make the iPhone thicker to accommodate the radio and larger battery and therefore making the iPhone non-compatible with a lot of accessories already on the market. (hence why it is only EDGE with AT&T) Not to mention (I know everyone will start screaming over this) AT&T's "Digital" network is the largest of all providers. (NO MORE ANALOG=no more "big red map")
"Following"??? I'm sure Verizon rushed to launch this plan because, nation wide AT&T has g...

gsmrulz said: why is Verizon now starting to transition over tho the "GSM" family?

If you are referring to LTE, that is not a GSM technology. LTE is compatible with CDMA or GSM. The only reason VZW chose LTE is because Vodafone which is a part owner of VZW supports it. Vodafone will be helping VZW develop LTE. Now if you've read the financials of both AT&T and VZW, you'll know that both companies are neck and neck. They are both trying to be number one so they both have to be competitive.

AT&T always fluffs up their numbers by counting their pre-paid services in total consumers... funny how VZW may have been beaten out by AT&T in 4th quarter, but who was still profitable??? Oh yeah thats right VZW... And the big red map will still remain they will be converting a majority of the old analog networks to digital.

And as far as the iPhone or POS as I like to call it goes, that is the only reason why AT&T had more customers added these past 2 quarters
