The OS shouldn't care what the hardware is. From an OS standpoint, at least from Windows Mobile's perspective, WM doesn't care if you have a touch creen or a mouse or whatever, they are all just "pointing devices", and unless WM behaves radically different than all other versions of windows, they all present as "mouse" events. So if the hardware is able to present as a mouse event (and I've seen all kinds of "touch" hardware that can do that, including capacitive touch screens), then it shouldn't matter.

As to multitouch, that's slightly different. If the hardware is presenting mouse events to the OS, the OS might be confused. On the other hand, I've seen touchpads for regular windows that are capable of multitouch, so I'd have to say ...

Well, yes and no.

With S60, perhaps. Nokia said it only worked with resistive, but then Samsung rolled out the Omnia HD with capacitive, and bam, it works fine.

Windows Mobile, however, still has an annoying number of places (like most of the zillions of settings screens) where a stylus is required. That can be worked around, but not easily. It requires something like the extra hardware of an optical mouse (like the Omnia.)

It will take a completely revamped, truly finger-friendly version of Windows Mobile to really support capacitive screens.

i heard that capacitive screens are more expensive than resistive, so doing that would only up the price of the phone.

Until Win mo is at ver. 7, it won't support capacitive screens. That's the way it is.

And using that stylus doesn't work too well on my iPhone. passably well, but not enough to matter.
