It is simple...

It is really f-ed up. Simple as that.

Cellphone providers know people text left and right so they can charge more. Everyone with or without a text plan texts.

I blame it all on the kids and those that think it is cool to text left and right. Text messages are designed to send a quick message and not used to carry on conversations like some of those idiots out there like to do.

Think about it... it is cheaper to call, so CALL!!

Cellphone providers sees this trend so they can jack up the price for texting. Parents are now forced to pay for the text packages so they don't get a HUGE charge because of their idiotic kid.

Texting is popular in other countries because it is MORE expensive to call so people text. For some reason p...

do people get charged for instant messenging?

i just think its dumb to sit around and text since it cost more than talking.

i don't mind texting at all. i text my friends telling them i will be 10 mins late and such. i don't carry on an entire conversation.

if you read my posting carefully i was referring to the kids and youngings as dumb. unless you are in that age group?

they are not dumb, they just dont pay the bill so they dont know what the consequences of texting are when it comes to paying for it. and you were a kid once to and you did dumb stuff as well.

I still don't get why texting is dumb, regardless of one's age. If you text heavily, yes, you are dumb if you don't have messaging package on your plan. But if you have a messaging plan, texting *can be* more economical than voice calls (e.g., $30 Messaging Unlimited for Families). Yes, AT&T and other carriers are price gouging and should be criticized as such, but that doesn't make texting dumb, even if you are a teenager that sends hundreds of messages a day.

That used to be true, but many people prefer to text than call, not to be "cool" but out of habit (IM generation), convenience (e.g., broadcasting to multiple recipients, no need for pleasantries while keeping your message to the point), and out of necessity (i.e., voice call is not appropriate or viable).

SMS has added benefit of archiving, great for giving out information such as address/phone/email. And there are many SMS-based search engines, such as Google SMS.

That said, I do find it rather disturbing that messaging plan is rapidly becoming more of a norm than an exception. Data plan is next.

GREAT points filburt, you're exactly right.

in africa for example, carriers encourage texting more than calling.

and it is reather disturbing that the prices are going up, but if its that much of a problem, just get a package, or don't do it.

average joes like us have no heresay when it comes to companies changing prices majority of the time anyways.

actually "average joes" do, you can vote with your wallet there are other companies that have generous unlimited texting packages, tmobile, sprint, or a local flat-rate regional carrier. the choices are there.

just because you do not txt does not give you the right to call people who txt idiots especially the younger generation. Its the parent's fault for not placing limitations on the account or calling the cellular company to disable their phones to sent and receive txt, its a matter of laziness, if that is really an issue and the parent needs to save money they can make a simple call to customer support.

txting is not only "cool" its a better and efficient way to get a message accross, who is gonna call to say, "hey can you pick up some milk" when you can send a simple text message. who would seriously go though all that trouble to dial a number for a simple message.

regardless of what you think text messages are "designed" for people ...

actually, it is more expensive to call in europe. i would know. my parents live there and i visit often.

and i do text. i don't text stupid stuff. i don't hold entire conversations regarding gossips with text.

i am not here to argue just to express.

i must have been misinformed about calls in europe, now i see it makes sense. any ways what it stupid is subjective. would it be worse to hear other people gossip or have "stupid conversations" according to you, at least you dont have to hear it if it bothers you that much.

sometimes some stuff should just be left alone and let things be.

That is actually not true. Voice rates in most European countries are a lot higher than they are in the US. This is why they text so much over there... it saves them money on voice minutes.

In the US, its a very different phenomenon... texting isn't about saving money, its about the 'cool' factor and its less obtrusive then constantly calling your buddies over minor stuff. Only 13-year old girls still think its cool to talk on the phone constantly to their friends, and even that is probably changing.

i didnt know that, i see why they text more. probably explains why people in n.america talk more. it makes sense that txting is cheaper in europe, its better to text someone in france from germany than to call and pay international tariffs

and the 13-year old girl thing, as far as talking, its true, i have a little sister myself, her phone is glued to her head. i dont talk much on my phone, i'd rather text or instant message, and i use voip more than anything. less RF exposure right, lol.

I have a brother who prefers to text entire conversations... I prefer to call for a conversation or text for something simple.

The problem with texting entire conversations is that it takes too long and is disruptive. No matter how good you are at texting, it takes longer and occupies more of your attention than a quick phone call.

I use text messages if I don't need a response (like to say I'm going to be a bit late getting home) or if I expect the response to be short (such as "need anything at the store?"). But I prefer a call if there's going to be more than 1-2 responses because it's more efficient and less intrusive.

Well, now, my mom actually just got unlimited texting on her phone. Scary! But she's 41, and has started to pick up on texting rather well. Even though I think she only texts me at the moment, but it IS a lot easier to talk to people.. like when she was in the court waiting room because my sister (15) was spastic and getting into a lot of trouble, for her hearing mom had to talk to me and we did carry on a conversation, but only because we couldn't talk otherwise.

I like it more because there's no reason for everyone and their grandmother to always be on the up-and-up about what's going on in your life. I am 21, so I guess I fit in that IM/TEXT conveniency group, but I just like it more sometimes. I like being able to talk to someone...
