I did this 2 years ago, I took my own phone to the store and was able to sign 11 months contract. I used the phone as second line, my primary is with Sprint (better reception where I live). After a year I canceled the contract and used the phone when I travel (get local SIM no contract)

Only people who don't do any research and I too lazy can get caught in this (2 years contract for just a SIM)
