Current Tesla Motors Roadster EPA range numbers:

230 mi EPA city
211 mi EPA highway
221 mi EPA combined (city/highway)

So, if the lithium ion battery in the Roadster could be extended then we would see:

2300 mi EPA city
2110 mi EPA highway
2210 mi EPA combined (city/highway)

Even if these numbers were halved we could shut OPEC down. Those scientists' lives are in serious jeopardy. It is good that they got the word out as soon as they did.

As others have pointed out in other threads, gasoline and diesel are just one of the many uses for petroleum. What do you think that keyboard you're typing on is made from?

Let's not forget power plants that run on oil will be using more to generate this extra power.

Keep in mind that they build most of these experimental cars with the express purpose of generating numbers. Most are even clost to practical for a family of four driving long distance.

This would actually amount to a reduction in petroleum consumption (all other things remaining equal). It's more energy efficient (and potentially less polluting, with the right infrastructure) to burn that fuel in an oil-fired powerplant than it is to burn it in your car's engine. There are things that one can practically do with a large, fixed powerplant that just aren't feasable in a tiny, mobile powerplant under an auto's hood.

But you're right in that it won't spell doom to the oil industry.
