Prolonged battery life?

How can you prolong the life of a battery by updating the software of a phone? I understand that the web may be improved, Bluetooth updated by removing the restrictions, etc.
But how can one make a battery longer by updating the software?
(I'm sorry, I guess this is more of a rant than a thread) but if it is possible to prolong a battery that to me is B.S. in that Verizon only waits for enough complaints to make a battery last as long as it SHOULD.

it changes the power consumption of some programs and applications.

THe perfect example is the motorola Q. It had probably the worst battery life of any phone I've ever had. After a software update (not the first) it literally quadrupled my battery life. I don't know how much of a difference the voyagers update will give it, but it is certainly possible

Well. How do you know how long a battery should last for? Especially for a powerhouse phone like that? You have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering? Battery Physics (i dunno what you would call it)? that was my rant.

So I guess when the engineers saw this becoming a chronic problem (the only way to test it is ultimately word of mouth review from the public), they reprogrammed the phone (re-write some coding/procedures) so perhaps certain functions won't require that much power? I guess it's like in the last scenes of Apollo 13 where those scientists were trying to rewrite procedures and programs to give that crew enough power to land.

but how would I know? I'm not an engineer or anything ...

Actually, the device and application software plays a huge role in how long the battery lasts on any device. You may or may not know that depending on available signal strength devices will turn up power to the radio to maintain a stable network connection in areas of poor coverage. A bug in the software that controls this function could cause the firmware to constantly run the radio at full power, even in areas of good signal strength. This level of power consumption is unnecessary and severely impacts the battery life.
This is but one example, that happens more often than you might think, where software impacts battery life. Application software too can impact battery life by prompting the device to use more power than it really needs to....

It's like updating the BIOS in a computer, because that's bascially what a cell phone is. I've been a long time Verizon member, and I can tell you i'm very surprised that Verizon even has the Voyager
