WiFi on Planes - Good Idea?

This is great! SAS, KLM and Lufthansa have also done this in Europe. I expect Virgin America to be the next. WiFi would be great on a plane for those who need it. However, your 1-2 hours of silence and relaxation from the work world will soon disappear, and you will have to check your email, and send that report whilst in flight!

And what happens when full wifi is available? with SKYPE, you might have "that guy" sitting next to you on a conference call. Although useful, it could get old quick. We shall see.

Good point about Skype, but I bet the latency from such a connection will make it near impossible. I had a friend who irc'd flying from France to the US and while not horrible, there was lag.

This could be great for students and other similar individuals that need to do their homework while traveling about. Of course this is assuming they have an awesome battery pack or an AC outlet.

I know I could've used a feature like this.

That's very true. If nothing else, planes have been the one place where you could escape from work. There goes that.

Just make sure the flight attendants don't catch you watching porn:

The 3-5 hour flights I make from east to west coast and back are SO boring. I would kill to be able to check email as opposed to sitting bored listening to the same stale MP3s on my phone. Sometimes I won't check my email all night/morning on purpose, then log in and download it all right before I get on the plane. Then I just read my new messages while in the air. 😛 I have to have something to do, and work certainly keeps my mind occupied. Airplanes are the LEAST relaxing places ever. I'd much rather escape the airplane than escape work.
