Companion Lines

I hope this hasn't already been posted, I didn't notice it. My fiancee has cellular one and one of her friends had a companion line through her. We went in to switch my fiancee over to AT&T the other day and set her up with a new phone and found that we could opt out and start a new contract, but the companion line can't be removed, period. They wouldn't let her drop it without charging an early termination fee. Anyone know why you could opt out/create a new contract with AT&T, but have no choice but to keep a companion line they don't wish to have under the new program? I'm confused.
