... but according to their own website, if you switch over to an AT&T plan, you'll have to also buy a new AT&T branded phone for some reason. I contacted customer support, and they confirmed that even if your cellone handset is of a same make and model that AT&T currently sells, you're still required to purcahase a new phone. Why your current phone couldn't just be reflashed with AT&T firmware by a technician was explained to me as a hardware limitation, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

So much for AT&T being "the most open network in the country." Bah. I miss CellOne already.

Probably because most stores wouldn't have the hardware or software to flash phones. Now if they would just unlock it for you, it'd be easier.

They probably want people to get a new phone to sign a new contract.

I think a big part of the new phone requirement is that the entire Dobson network will be converted to AT&T network. This means that the settings for data, SIM card locks, etc. will be phased out for Dobson, and new AT&T equipment will be issued to work with the newly converted (or soon to be converted) AT&T network.

If your phone is unlocked, and they still required you to get a new phone, you could simply take your new AT&T SIM card out and put it in your old CellularOne branded phone. That wouldn't be a bad phone, especially if you get a new phone with no contract if that is the case.

Maybe just get one of those free phones when you sign up, if AT&T offers such deals.

Well I am an orginal ATT wireless customer. I am still using my old ATT wireless SIM card. They told me the same thing that I would have get ATT branded phones. Well years later I am still using the same SIM card I started with. I have an unlocked Razr and KRZR phones. I still get my night and weekend at 7 pm free of charge also. Free incoming text messages. But no rollover, but my unlimited Data service it 24.99 before a 15% discoount.
So until my Sim card dies I am never switch to the "new" ATT.

All the current plans require at least a 1-yr contract (despite the articles going around), and to get any kind of phone deal (discounted price), you would also have to sign a contract.

It'll probably be similar to when Cingular bought AT&T Wireless, they let everyone switch over, but with new service agreements.

Will Celluar One phones allow you to change internet settings (last I checked, T-Mobile didn't)? If you can, just put in the new sim card and change the settings and you're good to go.

It can be done, but the problem is AT&T's network will do a quick sniff of your firmware and if it's not their version it will either completely lock out your phone from the data network, or at least block your access to AT&T WAP sites. This is mainly done to cripple unlocked phones on their network, but I haven't got a definate answer yet from anyone with the required know-how as to how the network will see Dobson handsets.

I'm guessing they will just send updated settings down to the handset via SMS, as thats the easiest and most common sense way of doing it.

Funny, my unlocked Nokia N95-3 works perfectly with AT&T's data, the setting for the phone were set up automatically by pulling the information off the sim card. So, don't think there would be a problem manually adding AT&T's wap settings.

And you have full access to all of AT&T's WAP sites too, or just wireless data? This is kinda important seeing how a lot of AT&T's advanced features can only be accessed through their WAP portal.

You do understand the way GSM works, right? They don't have to change didly squat network-wise, as if that were the case, roaming wouldn't exist and my cellone handset would go dead after the new year.

The only thing that seperates my w580 from an AT&T w580 is the firmware running it, theirs being locked down with proprietary nonsense. While it's true that not all stores have the equipment to reflash a handset, at least one in a major market is required to. Why waste postage and time for a process that is essentially plug-n-play, and takes but a few minutes? Telling me it's a hardware thing would be like the Geek Squad telling someone they have to buy an entirely new computer if they want to switch from XP to Linux... complete B.S. that...

Just go online and unlock your phone (I unlocked my old AT&T Wireless Moto V505 for $25, and Nokia 6010 for free).
Put in the wap apn and you're good to go.
Old specific apps may not work properly though.
Eg. I had no problems receiving SMS on my old V505, wasn't very successful at sending.
