No it doesn't. LTE is just their new 4G data connections.

Again, LTE is not GSM. Just like WiMAX isn't CDMA. They are just a connections for 4G technology. Now, one day, I could see every carrier getting ride of 2G and 3G due to the fact that voice can also be carried on the high speed connection. But by the time that happens, 5G will probably be out.

When the 4G's rollout both CDMA/GSM/iDen networks will still be around for voice and current customers. The 2 largest companies have 60+ mil customers that area still going to use that technology until it becomes like analog where the major of the people have switched to LTE and the carrier is given permission to turn off their old network. We wont see these signals disappear next year or anytime soon.

If I were to guess, I'd say another 10 years or so... But that IS the evolution of the cellular world. We can talk about it all day but its the nature of the beast for it to evolve.

CDMA will be gone some day, GSM, IDEN, HSDPA, you name it will be gone some day. The way voice calls will be processed will change but it is too complex for you to understand trueu. Nobody is in trouble, they are just planning on the future, a future where cellular as we know it today will slowly fade away.

I don't think the companies need permission to turn off their old networks, I think that provision only existed for AMPS (analog systems), but that date is only a few months away. Different carriers, including Cingular, Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, and more have already discontinued "TMDA"...

So what will happen to all the phones that run on CDMA? Will they be automatically switched over?

Should have switched to what? LTE isnt even fully developed, how would they have switched to it years ago?

Right, because LTE is completely seperate from GSM technology. GSM voice now is TDMA based (that's where you get that annoying buzz). So that doesn't really make sense to say that Verizon should have switched long ago. If anything, carriers should have switched to CDMA, due to the fact that CDMA has better voice quality and doesn't interfere with electronics.

For most people it would be a gradual process. As people become due for new phones they will purchase LTE capable phones. Early ones will probably be CDMA compatible as well since it will take time to build the network. Eventually (we're talking years), Verizon will cease CDMA support and force any stragglers to get new phones.

It's similar to what happened when analog was phased out.
