The short answer is no.

If have the right codes and Sprint gives you the MSL (which they are supposed to start doing) then you can do that already. Verizon doesn't have the same ESN checks in their activation process that Sprint has.

But of course the Sprint phone is still designed to work with Sprint services and has a lot of Sprint-specific software in it. It's also missing the software you would need to use any Verizon services other than voice.

What this announcement really means is that if Google, HTC or Nokia wants to make an Android, Windows Mobile, or S60 phone for Verizon's network, they don't have to worry about whether Verizon likes it or not. If Verizon says "no thanks" to selling it as a Verizon phone, those companies ...

Well, yes, it is technically possible, but it's technically possible now.

To be officially sanctioned by Verizon under this new program, either Sprint or the manufacturer would need to submit that model phone to Verizon for testing.

Sprint has no incentive to. That wouldn't make much sense.

A manufacturer might, and that is the point of the program. HTC could submit the Touch for testing, then announce that the Touch is approved for use on Verizon's network.

However, to make it a decent experience, HTC would probably need to offer some kind of separate software update that would add Verizon-friendly software. I doubt Sprint would ever allow a manufacturer to sell a Sprint-branded device that came pre-loaded with Verizon-friendly ...

What about the new Treo Phones? Will we be able to purchase those (755) and use it on the Verizon network? I'm not sure how this impacts us.

If I were Palm, I would make sure that was possible. You still might see 30- to 90-day exclusives with new devices like the Centro, but after that exclusivity period, I think it would be smart for Palm to have all of its devices certified under this program and made available directly to consumers.

They way they've been making strategic decisions lately, I can't say I have have faith in Palm to do the smart thing in this case, but I'm pretty sure Palm will have the option of doing that.

A definite "No" for AT&T and T-Mobile. Completely different, incompatible technology.

It will *technically* work for Sprint, I just don't think anyone should get their hopes up that it will anything remotely like unlocked GSM phones. It won't be. Most Sprint phones may never be approved for Verizon, and even ones that are, still won't work very well for anything other than basic voice.
