but sprint is calling it 4G.

this is all so funny. But its cool that they (those wireless gurus) finally accepted another technology besides the 5 originals.

EV-DO is 3G. Isn't WiMAX faster than that?

Up until now, WiMax wasn't any G. It meets the speed requirements for 4G, and now is officially sanctioned as a 4G technology.

You mean it's officially sanctioned as a 3G technology. At least, that's what the article says....

WiMAX isn't a cellular technology, or G tech for short. WiMAX is actually a technology that was developed for city wide wifi but wasn't accepted due to everyone having to purchase WiMAX hardware. Sprint has taken it as their 4G and now it officially meets the requirements to be called as such.

technically it is 3G, because there still is no official 4G, however since it is paired with LTE, which we out here in non-engineer land have been calling 4G but the ITU also calls 3G, then we will call wimax 4G. it only makes sense.

If it isn't 4G then why did you call an ""official 4G standard" in the title of your article.

we changed it. though i still think the solution is very confusing. wimax (and LTE) both should meet the itu's standards for 4G and use completely different technology than 3G - 3G is CDMA-based while 4G is OFDM based. however neither have been approved by the itu as 4G yet and so are called 3G. and so since the itu approved them as 3G, we have changed our headline to be more accurate. even though we in the press, as well as everyone else in this industry refers to both wimax and LTE as 4G.

the whole situation is confusing. isn't it.

currently 3.5G are
HSDPA on GSM side
EV-DO REV 0 on CDMA side
while 3.75G are
HSUPA on GSM
EV-DO Rev A on CDMA
probably WiMax and LTE are considered as 3.85G

as the mod pointed out this is already regarded as 4g in the industry. And will most likely be 4g when it is deployed. Along with LTE
