Verizon droped the ball on the Q9

I'm happy for ATT customers. This phone looks great. As for Verizon, they really drooped the ball on this phone. My contract is up for Verizon and I think its time for a change

If you like to be ripped off by your carrier and be given substandard phones that are locked down or late to market, stay with Verizon. EVERY smartphone they have ever released has been gimped one way or another. I can guarantee that if this were released on VZW, the software would be modified to force video recording to a specific format to force you to use their vzw crap, and the GPS locked to remove your choices so you have no choice but to use VZNavigator.

Tell me that what I say is false and I you will look like the idiot here. Its well known that verizon gimps all of their phones to remove choices from people and forcing them to use their VZ services. The same phone on other carries like Sprint had more capability because they didn't gimp them like verizon did. Regardless of the higher end phone, you always know that a VZW phone has something hobbled and can do less than the similar phone on other carriers. That's a fact.

In the case of Smartphones, this is usually not anything big (maybe some branding, etc), but with the new Q9m, Verizon pretty much turned it into a piece of crap with an identity crisis. Just watch the commercials. I threw up a little when I saw what they did to it.

Your joking right? Its more than just branding do. Do a quick search on Google. On my Treo 650, DUN (dial up networking) was gimped where the Spring version was not. Verizon Treo 650 also removed ability to record video in anything other than 3gp. The BlackBerry 8830 (vzw) had GPS gimped to force you to use VZNavigator. That is frustrating because there are many other apps that use GPS other than mapping, and NONE of them are usable because VZW forces you to use Navigator ONLY. They even gimped BT on the Samsung SCH-A970.

Their gimping is actually quite predictable. If the phone has a feature that provides something in competition with any of their other pay services, you KNOW it will be gimped, thats a fact. Other carriers don't do this...

Sprint 650 also locked out DUN. You do know that Verizon is not the only carrier that does this, right? If you want a totally liberated phone, buy an unlocked unbranded model. Other than that, deal with Verizon's limitations. Because AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all do this as well.

The Sprint and Tmobile Treos arent gimped, the AT&T BlackBerry 8800 has GPS that is open. The Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Dash (tmobile) allowed sending to the Live picture service. Should I go on? The gimping by other carriers is limited compared to Verizon. With VZW, the gimping is very comprehensive and covers EVERYTHING that gives you choices. I buy a new upper end phone at least 2 to 3 times per year and research them all the time. If you are a gadget freak, you know to stay clear of Verizon .. it is a well known problem with them.

Im going to be purchasing the AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser) on the 25th (if the rumors are true). And when I get it, I am fairly sure my GPS won't be gimped, I will be able to use all of the video codecs, my DUN won't be locked, will be able to send to other picture services from the menu, and other things. I can GUARANTEE that if the same phone were coming out for VZW, it would have everything locked down tightly.

I can't wait for the Tilt. Right now I have a BlackBerry Peal and a Curve, but a WM6 device will be a welcome change.

Windows Mobile is the best. I too had a VZW Treo 650 and I hated Palm OS.

I still have my Treo 650 from Verizon. I am going to cancel it pretty soon though. Its crazy. I pay a Verizon service for my ex, a Tmobile for my son, and I have AT&T. My Treo right now is having some weird problem where it constantly reboots over and over from time to time. It is very aggrivating.

If it's in a loop, try hard resetting. This should remove any sort of malware you have and it would restore it to (pretty much) factory default. It would be like having a new one.

Ya I know ... I do it all the time. LOL It has a bug where filling up main memory causes the problem. My phone is used by my ex, and me. We take lots of pictures with it and sometimes forget to set it to record to SD card so we end up filling up main RAM. It doesn't have protection against that for some reason ... I was sure there would be a patch for it, but I have not seen one yet.

Yeah, using the RAM for file storage can be a problem.

By the way, in regards to T-Mobile Treos, Phone Scoop only says the AT&T and Cellular One Dobson had the GSM 650.

I live in the SF bay area so swithing from verizon to att will have no impact for my when it comes to signal strength. And I just about had enough of the verizon UI. Even on smartphones and pda they still have to mess with it. And the verizon Q9 has a 1.3 mp camera, just like it older model. Not much is different from the old verizon Q and the new Q9. Att Q looks like its features are better and not locked like verizon. I know some people don't care about camera's on phone's but at least throw me a bone and update the camera just a little. I have the Q from verizon and I love it. Best phone I've owned from them. But why come out with a newer model that for will not benefit me. I've been with verizon for a long time, since the GTE wire...

I might have considered it, but I don't like the square screen. It needs to be bigger. Especially for WM. Palm is decent with a square screen.

Ya Windows Mobile has so much screen real estate taken up by the interface, so you need a wider screen to make up for it. Palm has only one line (top) taking up screen real estate. But the BEST platform for making the best use of its screen is BlackBerry. There is no phone interface taking up the application display, and menu pops up when you press the menu button. If BlackBerry had the same application suppor that WM phones had, I would say BB is the ultimate platform. Right now, it is the ultimate platform for one handed use on the go because all messaging requires VERY few clicks compared to WM. You can't get any better than one click to send either email, sms, or mms to a contact on BB. I will miss that.

Yes, BB does make good use of the screen, but I just plain don't like the OS. It's too bland, not enough features...

Yes it doesnt have many features. But as a messaging and email device for people on the go there is nothing that can touch it.

That is true. If that's all you want to do. WM can do push email too. But it makes battery life less.

Ya, but on the BB I can have 10 email accounts and have access to all of my messages at once. And if I have to reply or send messages, I can do so very quickly without VERY few clicks. On WM that isnt possible without 3rd party software. To email someone from the main menu, I just type a couple of characters of name, scroll down, and click email contact. It even knows that if im sending mail to someone in my work domain, to use my work email to send the message. It may only seem like a few seconds and a few clicks is not a big deal, but if you spend all day emailing very frequently to multiple people, it IS a big deal. This is why BlackBerry will remain the phone of choice for corporations. I just would have thought Microsoft would have lear...

pinstack.com has a lot of extras for free for BB's. they also have some really nice themes to use if you dont like the "standard" BB interface.

ATT didn't do much better...this phone was cool when announced but it's been so long in development that too many other options now competing, IMO. Maybe MOTO is to blame, but no wifi is probably the killer for me.

What most people here don't get is, yes, there are other phones that are slightly more advanced than this, but the general public who are buying these phones don't care. They just want a phone that does what it is meant to do. I think this should sell well (not saying that I like, just saying consumers might.)

Well, to me it looks like the general public is getting a little bit more technology savy b/c everyone I talk to who has VZW are telling me how much they hate how they can't use all the features that their phones are SUPPOSED to come with, so it looks like the lean is more towards ATT.

I agree. Like I said earlier in this post, why did verizon even come out with the q9. It's not much different that the Q. As you can see the Q9 has great potential but verizon has to mess with it. Its like buying a high end spots car and the car dealer disables all the features and performance of the car. Verizon needs to realize that they provide wireless service. If the want to go into the cell phone production business than make a crappy phone that no one will buy and leave the moto's and lg alone with the original software and there own UI. Ok nuff said, I'll get off my soap box 🙂 Have a good night.
