Are they out there on their own like Amp'd, or are there people behind them like Helio?

they are their own company. they've been around for a few years now. they do not use any other company unless it's for a roaming partner.

metro could do an aggressive takeover but i dunno if the SEC would let that happen, screw the sec, or the fcc but the way things are going, it seems as if telco's in this country are consolidating, tmo/suncomm, att/cellular one dobson, sprint/nextel

Metro can do that but they have to convince shareholders and the board. Who knows also, I didn’t look, but Leap could have a poison pill associated to it, so either they would have to bid a lot higher or wait until that pill comes off. The only way they will win is have a high premium. Metro and Leap, if they were to combine, wouldn’t pose any anti-competitive problems so I doubt the FCC, and DOJ would set conditions on them. of course, they might with some of their overlapping but after that I doubt it. Just PCS is being cheap.

I know about the network, I meant financially, who backs them? If it's just shareholders, that seems a bit shakey to me.

Nope. They started from scratch, building their own networks.
