It's definitely plastic, although I thought it looked and felt fine.
I really can't imagine many people using the stylus with this phone, unless they frequently need to input Asian characters. The optical mouse (in cursor mode) isn't a perfect replacement, but it's good enough for the few situations where you need it. Having the stylus hanging off the side would drive me bananas.
