With the exception of Sony-Ericsson, doesn't everyone else use microSD for the most part? It was built primarily for the cell phone industry. Almost every manufacturer supports it. What's the point of creating yet another standard. Why don't they all just agree to use microSD, which again, is pretty much what's going on now?

depending on your phone it may take SD, miniSD or microSD. They want a universal format so that they can produce it and not loose money on 3rd party companies making those SD formats. Most new formats are created so that a company can profit more for accessories. Take Sony for instance, they created their own memory stick and wouldn't let anyone produce it until the FCC intervened. Now theres another useless formate just cuz Sony wanted to make more money.

The companies said UFS would speed access times for flash memories, ease high-speed access to large media files and reduce power consumption in consumer devices. Users currently have a three-minute access time for a 4-gigabyte, high-definition movie. The companies said the new standard would reduce the wait to a few seconds.

"Standardization of flash-based technologies will be crucial in determining how fast stora...

its odd that they say the standard will alleviate the 3 minute wait time because that has more to do with other factors then the access time of the card, making a standard won't help push the industry along it will just restrict the industry from moving forward once we pass the standard
