Wouldn't that be kind of a disaster?

AT&T has the rights to the iPhone for the next...what is it, 3 years? So what would Apple do if they entered the auction? I don't see them selling phones made by other manufacturers. So what's the point?

just this generation of iPhone. So that means that anything new is all on apple. Although I think it would be smarter on their part to have their own line up of devices and run as an MVNO.

I would think that buying the spectrum would take time, and time to figure out how they would deploy service. Probably around the time they ready to launch the exclusive agreement with AT&T would near be over - and they could launch iService -or whatever they would call it. I could be wrong - and probably am ;)

I would think Jobs would want to build out his own towers instead of leasing or renting them from others. He'll probably come out with a whole new format different from CDMA or GSM. iSpectrum.

Knowing Apple, there's no way Jobs would use someone else's technology.

You mean not like how Mac OS X uses BSD? ;-)

You are right though, Apple does often ignore standards and goes off on their own which can be bad... but on the other side it means it frees them a bit to innovate which can be good lol

I was thinking more along their hardware than their software. I don't think they would use anyone else's towers.

There's a five year US exclusivity agreement on the current model iPhone. But keep in mind that the auction isn't even taking place until early 2008 and whoever wins will have to spend time building the necessary infrastructure.

I don't see Apple pursuing this. Yes, it is a potentially lucrative market but there's so much about that is utterly against Apple's historic business model: open access, having to maintain a network instead of focusing on hardware, etc. Most importantly, Apple would be entering a market that's MUCH more competitive than anything it's used to, which means competitive pricing. I can't see Steve Jobs wanting to take part in that.

Yea, Jobs and all of apple's products are in my "Too F'in Much" Catagory. I'll keep on building my PC's and use less expensive and just as good products.

Well, Apple can’t just sit on the current plans and that is it especially as a publicly traded company. they must come up with new services to give to their customers. therefore, this current Iphone is obviously locked up for multiple years but obviously, they can come up with the next generation one that isn’t exclusively tied. Buying up spectrum for both Apple and Google will allow for more things that they can do. they could do an MVNO type operation and they could even launch their own networks. The cable companies bought spectrum in the AWS auction and they aren’t using it yet but obviously, these companies need to think ahead instead of just thinking about today. just to have that spectrum even if they don’t use it is valuable especial...

The spectrum isn't due to be held back to the government until 2009. By then any contract Apple has w/ AT&T will have been satisfied.
