I've got mine, and to answer my own question...

Yes, it really is that shoddy.

I haven't checked to update the firmware yet, and I've just now gotten time to mess with it.

The UI is slow and the touch scrolling is underwhelming. It's way more responsive than any other VZW touch screen phone (Dare, Voyager, Glyde), but even in scrolling through the main menu it is tedious and not very fun.

The UI also looks good in pictures but it's herky-jerky in person. The In-store display was just as bad, but I'd figured it had too many processes running or had a memory leak. NOPE.

My biggest gripe with the UI is though it is a solid UI with the thumb wheel or trackball, it is garbage with a touch screen. Anyone who has gotten a good case of Blackberry thumb is going to hate having to move their hands all over the place to use the arbitrarily-placed-and-not-thumb-friendly menus. One handed operation is bad. There's no other way around it, the Storm gets its arse handed to it by the iPhone here.

Voice quality is... eh.. but my VZW coverage isn't that good, so I should be lucky I can place calls to begin with. I was hoping it was going to be a bit stronger than the LG Dare (the only other VZW unit I have for comparison) , but eh.

The click screen is trash. At first it seemed really cool. I loved it navigating and it didn't take me long at all to figure it out. The problem is TYPING! The landscape keyboard is unusable.. While in the middle of the screen the travel feels 'right,' around the edges and near the bottom it's too 'loose.' The bottom row of keys is murder to type with especially.

Mine also seems to want to switch to landscape all the time.
