anyone actually surprized by this decision? ha

i'm sure soon most of the main producers will try to jump on the "let's just copy Apple" bandwagon.

or hopefully come out with some other ground-breaking technology...like, oh i dont know, making calls from wifi and making those calls unlimited, and somehow giving you full coverage.
oh wait, T-Mobile already did that! 😁

the "let's just copy Apple" bandwagon.

Motorola has been producing keypadless, touchscreen phones for years. And they are not the only one's either. If you actually hear or read the presentation, Motorola states thinking about introducing such devices in the US. Motorola actually had a touchscreen phone before color screens even came out with the Accompli A388. Then with the A760, A768, E680/E680i, A780 (which incorporated a keypad, but still mainly touchscreen), and E6. US carriers have been reluctant to launch these phone in the US. Cingular actually canceled the launch of the A780 in the US.

What Apple has been able to do is to get a US carrier to launch the phone.

yes i am aware of this. i guess i should have been more specific and say in the us.
i mean it's obvious now that someone finally took the risk to "adventure" the touchscreen in the US (and that it has blown up since then) that the rest of the big players are going to give it a shot as well.

The point is US carriers refused to offer such devices for consumers, other than Pocket PC phones. Motorola and others have had them, tried to offer them in the US and gotten them in carrier trials only to have them rejected due to usability concerns.

What the iPhone was able to do is open the door for carrier acceptance of such technology in the US.
