this would be like directv and dish network merging. with both unlimited carriers merging, competition would be reduced. probably would not be unlimited anymore after awhile.

shouldn't be allowed.

Considering that there is exactly ONE market that has both Metro PCS and Cricket (the sprawling metropolis of Modesto/Merced in California), I don't think the FCC is too worried about a monopoly emerging out of this.

Yeah, bingo. And its not like the FCC has been especially big on blocking mergers/acquistions anyway.

ATT and Verizon (especially) have been eating up the little carriers like popcorn lately. Dobson, Ramcell, Rural Cellular... who's next? 👀

Very true, but divestitures and conditions are their specialties. We might see some of that here. Although not a lot.

Agreed. That's been par for the course for them. But there isn't much overlap between Metro and Cricket, from what I've heard. Divestitures shouldn't affect them much at all.

Yes, that is very true. There is one market that is overlapping with them, but I do not think enough to force them to divest. Therefore, divestitures might be either small or none at all. With conditions, there always could be some; however, I do not know any that they could do. Perhaps the regulators would find it especially since divestitures and conditions are their specialties. Should be an interesting merger.

Like popcorn huh? What flavor?

Tell that to Sirius and XM!

That's a COMPLETELY different situation. There are only two satellite radio providers, so of course the FCC will be concerned about a monopoly. There are plenty of wireless carriers to keep competition healthy.

First of all, Sirius and XM merging wouldn't be a monopoly because they still have to compete with terrestrial radio (but as this isn't Sirius.com, lets not argue over this here). That wasn't my point though. I just meant that the FCC does interfere with mergers.

Well actually, a clause that the FCC set to those two companies doesn’t allow them to merge unless it is waived by the regulators and that is what those two are trying to convince them to release that clause especially with the merger announcement. The satellite companies obviously won’t be an overall monopoly as it does have to go against what we call free radio and music/content stores.

It is nothing like dish and directv. They are the only dish providers. Local or national Other then C-Band which only a very few peopel use now a days due to cost. But due to those cost is why you can't count them. Its like counting sat phones in with wireless phones! These two are NOT the only wireless providers. So I can't see how you compare the two!

Yeah, nevermind that we're one step closer to an all-you-can-yak national carrier that would properly stick it to the majors and drive down prices.
