Hasn't this been around for years?

I've been able to email and IM from AIM/AOL to mobile users for years.

This is new for Yahoo! Mail as it stated in the article. It wasn't claiming that it's the first time it's been possible to do that.

It wont be free SMS msgs though. I can send an IM from Yahoo to any cellphone now. And its been that way at least 4 years.

but this finally sends messages to a phone number (that you have associated with a contact). so i think it might finally be *real* SMS. we'll have to wait until the service launches to know for sure.

I can still do that now Eric. I guess we will have to wait and see, as you say, when the service launches how it will be different.

In the current yahoo messenger you are only able to sms 2 carriers. Sprint is not one of them. nor is verizon I beleive. ATT and Alltel are. Yahoo partners with a company to send sms. I would think with this you will be able to sms anyone and they will be able to return the sms from their phone to your messenger something that even with att works when it wants to with the current version.
