Coverage of What verizon is purchasing.
So that is what 51 cell sites covers 🙂

I thought that Verizon was only purchasing the Kentucky and Oregon networks?

Based on the Ramcell website, it looks like only Kentucky & Oregon are being sold, as I went to Ramcell.com, and did a search, I got a message when I clicked Kentucky & Oregon, that all stores closed on June 30, 2007. But for now, it looks like Ramcell is still in business to serve North Carolina. Besides, if their North Carolina coverage is rural, then VZW can't acquire North Carolina, due to VZW already having the A Side for that area, and they'd get both cellular licenses. I believe is if Ramcell is looking to sell the rest of their network, it might be either Alltel, USCC, or AT&T acquiring the rest of the company.

Actually, you can have both the A and B cellular licenses. When Cingular bought AT&T Wireless, it got to keep both licenses in most of Florida.
I think a bigger indication of whether rural coverage can be purchases is the number of competitors available to consumers. In a state like North Dakota where there are two statewide carriers (Verizon and Alltel), they would never be allowed to merge.

Competition is limited to RamCell, VZW, Sprint, and AT&Turd. The coverage in NC is very spotty, so I do not foresee them allowing VZW to take both sides of the 800. Alltel has some 1900, but they do not have an active network open. Alltel loves their 800, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did pick it up.
I foresee USCC picking it up since they already have much of NC already and they do not cover this area as is. The only draw back is that USCC has been pretty quiet for awhile.
