With well over 50% of the US still without 3G coverage, AT&T really needs to forget about silly crap like this until the majority of it's customers can realistically take advantage of it. It's very nice to talk about all these nifty new features & programs, but what good are they if we don't have the coverage to use them? I still can't believe that here in Long Island, suburb to the largest metropolitan city in the world, we still do not have any 3G coverage in over 80% of the island. And I know it's the same around the country. This should be the top, top, top priority for ATT. Then if they want they can roll out silly little programs like mobile TV or video sharing.... at least then their customers will be able to use them if they want to....

Truth. By the time AT&T has a substantial 3G footprint, Sprint will be launching WiMax in major metro areas.

Sprint might be bleeding customers from it's jugular, but they are still the kings when it comes to data pricing, data coverage, data speed and data ARPU.

I'd still rather have the freedom of GSM, than being tied down to proprietory Sprint or Verizon phones.

That's just launched, how can you say it's been a failure? It's an incredible idea that's been done in many different versions (though not in the U.S.) I'd be very surprised if the other carriers don't launch something similar soon.

As for video share, I suspect that it will also take off, but not so much because it's something that truly improves the quality/reliability of the service, but because it's a stupid gimmick that many people will think is cool.

You crazy. T-Mobile will be able to get customers that don't have service in their areas, just by them using the Hotspot@Home service since they can use the UMA service for calls.

I forget where I read it, but I heard that WiMax is going to be open to any compatible equipment. Meaning you can go to any store, buy any WiMax device and use it on Sprint's WiMax network.

AT&T has already announced their 4G plans:

Even now, Verizon & Sprint don't have 3g coverage nationwide, though they are far ahead of AT&T. And I agree with you that this isn't something that will be a huge hit (like SMS was) because coverage is just not that good.

But think about how the carriers work: They want to keep selling, and a huge part of that is having new offerings to people. Coverage isn't so important anymore, because most of the country is market-oversaturated anyway, so it's more about boosting ARPU than increasing the number of customers. Yes, 3G coverage is certainly a factor in that, but most of the ARPU comes from business users, and there's only been 3 3G...

Even AT&T said it will take up to 10 years. So, that is not gonna be done anytime soon, so its no point in looking at them for 4G.

I'm looking forward to the Sierra Wireless 880 aircard, suppose to be coming out on AT&T in September to be replacing the over a year old 875 aircard.

I'm sure in many areas, they do have have the necessary spectrum to use UMTS. 5MHz is a lot of spectrum

I know there a quite a number of metro areas that still aren't 3G, but the article does say 160 markets!!! That's quite a bit! Or so I think.

Question is, are those the only markets they have enough spectrum for UMTS?

Can't wait for 4G so we don't have to worry about that stupid 5MHz requirement for UMTS 👿
