Today Google announced plans of devolping free cellular service. Subscribers who sign up for the GPhone service will be able to use any unlocked phone or choose from a variety of phones offered by the Internet giant.

Services would be absolutely free and supported by non intrusive adds attached to the bottom of text and picture messages that the subscriber sends and receives. Google says that it plans to offer phone, messaging, GPS, video calling, and unlimited data at absolutely no cost to the subscriber.

Maybe on day this add will be on phonescoop. Pretty big stretch, but Google would be the company to do it!

What kind of technology would be cheap enough for that? HSDPA? WiMAX?

Advertisors will pay big money to have their advertisment on the bottom of Txt messages.

Think about it,

You send a message that says "Lets go out to dinner tonight" Underneath that the name & phone # of a local restaraunt pops up and seen by the person who gets the message. When they respond with "can we see a movie after?" you see the name of the new movie that just came out and a snipet of info about it.

Using a similar pay structure that google has now for the web site, it would definatly pay for itself.

It's still a lot of money for the buildout and it would take years to recover the money if Google made their network the way the big 4 did it. Now if they go the microcell route using WiMAX maybe, there's some possibilities.
