Verizon Cuts Its Own Deal With Broadcom
Ouch
I haven't been under contract since Oct.30 2005, ha, ha.
Anyway, I wish AT&T would do something like this!!!
Also what I don't understand about WCDMA is, I understand that it is a evolution of CDMA, but why is an evolution of CDMA also a next step for GSM, being 3G handsets???

Aren't all 3G handsets qualcomm chip based?
Yes, and all CDMA handsets are Qualcomm based.
I'm waiting for something that really impresses me to upgrade, like a 3.2mp auto-focus cameraphone, also I hear AT&T is suppose to be launching MobileTv in the 4th qtr of this year. So, those are the 2 things I'm waiting for.
HSPDA, HSUPA, and HSPA (combination of the first two) is an upgraded version of UMTS.

As far as I know W-CDMA is only used in Japan right now. I think VW should have waited, but I'm curious how this will work out for them.
wcdma is now used pretty much all over the developed countries. in the US, ATT uses it. pretty much all Euro carriers have migrated to it. China has its own flavor (TD-CDMA), but plans to give out licenses for WCDMA also (hopefully in time for olympics) etc etc..
in fact Verizon Wireless does not even use WCDMA.. it uses EVDO for its third generation nws. however, both WCDMA and EVDO chipsets manufactured by QCOM shall be affected by the ban.. and QCOM has a much smaller presence in the WCDMA market.. so the Verizons and Sprints of the world get affe...

not true.. all 3g handsets are not qcom based..
qcom just has a good chunk of patents for the cdma tech.. so they bully the market around.. now somebody else is trying to play QCOM's dirty tricks on QCOM itself.. what u sow , so shall u reap.. 🤣

Absolutely not, majority of 3G handsets (including those marketed by the leader in the 3G space.... Nokia... ) are not QCOM based.
QCOM chipsets are in heavy use in the EVDO 3G (the one used by VZW and Sprint etc).. whereas they have smaller share in the WCDMA market.. which I believe shld be dominated by Texas Inst (as they probably supply those chips to Nok)
WCDMA is not an evolution for CDMA.. it is in the evolution path of GSM only. However, it shares some fundamentals i...

This injunction doesn't involve worldwide sales, it involves US sales. And on every 3G Cingular phone, I've seen the Qualcomm sticker. Does this mean Qualcomm has a lock on the W-CDMA 850/1900 dual mode chips?

If we are talking worldwide, then yes, TI dominates.

not true, there probably must have been some cing 3g phones with other chipsets.. say Nokia N75 ( NOK-QCOM combo does not exist mostly ).. or how abt the Moto 3G Cingular phone ( did it use the QCOM chip? )
WCDMA is not directly related to qualcomm's 1x2000,1xEVDO, wcdma was developed by NTT DoCoMo for their FOMA interface
The technology they are on is called CDMA2000.
The derivatives of that are the 1xRTT and 1xEV-DO you see on your VZW handsets.
W-CDMA is the other route that GSM carriers have gone with. One of the main differences is that W-CDMA requires 5MHz of Spectrum while CDMA2000 only requires 1.25MHz of Spectrum

3G GSM handsets and all CDMA handsets because 3G GSM use technology borrowed from CDMA (it's called WCDMA) and the chips are made by Qualcomm.
Actually, that's not necessarily true. A company, you may have heard of it before, called Nokia, actually produces WCDMA chipsets. Nokia is in different patent disputes with Qualcomm. Another company, called Texas Instruments, also produces WCDMA chipsets.
Yes, Qualcomm does produce some WCDMA chispets, but they do not produce all of them.

Guess verizon is anxious to deliver some more stale hand sets.
