just when I rule out switching to CDMA, SPRINT has to stick it to me. Good thing is my contract with the AT&T devil for my soul is up early 2008.
...
Well, have fun with the locked down CDMA phones ;)
GSM/HSDPA/LTE equals freedom!!!!
I will never buy another carrier branded/locked phone again.
...
Good stay on those crappy networks with slow internet and the retarded MediaFlo services.
...
MediaFlo ?? Nope. Unlocked phones, and I get 3G HSDPA here.. so not worried about "slow speeds".
...
HSDPA is slower than WiMax. HSOPA which isn't out yet will use a Beam type data transfer and will be very fast but you have to have a direct view of the tower, and it will slow with just a few hundred people using it.
...
yes a question about HSOPA, what is that all about?
...
No I meant HSOPA its a competitor of WiMax.
...
Oh, so we are here again. Comparing WiMax to LTE (which is still in development).
::sigh::
...
i know. ANOTHER war 😕
...
It isn't a war, the war will be over before LTE is out of development. NTT Docomo plans to deploy LTE in 2010 vs Sprint deploying WiMax in 2007 and SK Telecom releasing WiBro in 2004.
Where is the war again?
...
No no no.... Im not creating a war. Im full supporter of WiMax over LTE. I was just comparing it to this because WiMax is ready for deployment and it will be a long time before something else can compete with it. Its okay anyway because no other carrier wants to go with WiMax besides Altech which is a South African company. WiMax will be way better for where I live and Sprint gets much better coverage here than any other company. Yeah I can hear you but you sound like $h!T, oh it wasn't a dropped call I hung up on you.
...
HSOPA is a felxible bandwidth between 1.25 MHz to 20 MHz and has increased efficiency four times better than 3GPP release 6. The peak transfer rates is 100 Mbit/s for downlink and 50 Mbit/s for uplink. Looks good, but of course I'm sure there are downfalls which I dont know yet.
...
Now now.. play nice.
Seriously, who cares. If AT&T works for you (which it doesn't for me in Baltimore County) then enjoy it. I'll be sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for WiMax so I can dump my Comcast cable connection... 🙂
...
Actually WiMax should bring more of the freedom that GSM enjoys to the CDMA world because, well, WiMax isn't CDMA.
...
WiMax has its own wireless spectrum. I don't see why you'd think it'd have anymore freedom than anything else. What do you mean freedom?? Tell me the freedom difference between the "wireless technology" of GSM and CDMA, and don't say sim cards.
...
The freedom is that I can buy a GSM phone (quadband of course) and import it to the US and use it. On the other hand I can buy a fancy CDMA phone from Asia, and well ain't that a pretty brick.
The freedom that bnpballer wants is the freedom of not being locked to using only the phones that the carrier provides.
...
Umm... Well if you wanted to do that why not just buy a world phone?? You have to anyway if you plan to use the WCDMA network. I stay within North America if I visit other countries instead of getting charged up the but, I'd use a landline or prepaid.
...
Or do what I do, I use at&t for phones and sprint for a broadband card. sprint actually gave me a good discount on their plan.
I honestly here (valid) complaints about customer service on both carriers, I guess I've been lucky, so far no problems.
I was actually went with sprint for broadband till at&t fills in its hsdpa and then either wait out the contract, or just pay the etf and switch. But the more I've been reading about WiMax the more I just might keep things as they are.
...
Good Lord, when are these GSM people going to stop complaining about handsets? Give me a 2.5G handset and I can bet you there's a CDMA handset to match it. Face it, the handset is a tool, that's all. A tool to access a network. Yes, we know that At&t PLANS on building out their network to make it all 3G. Well, welcome to 2002 folks
...
your still locked into a contract, so whats the big deal?? GSM phones are overrated anyway, they only have about 5 real standouts and the rest are about the same as what U.S. CDMA carriers can offer.
Chris
...
Except in about 30 secs or so, I can go from my 8525 to my N75 and not have to deal with vzw or sprint to change the phone via their websites or cs.
...
Oh yeah...And what do you do when your simm poppin' ruins your simm card? I used to work for your OH SO SPECIAL "CINGULAR" or "At&t" and I now work for Sprint, I will tell you I would NEVER, NEVER go back to GSM!!!
...
Are GSM and ATT that bad. I have ATT and they are pretty cool. I've been hearing that CDMA is the best way to go because it saves battery life and it's faster than GSM. Too bad I cant switch because... well im not exactly 18 yet but in two years I will be and i'll truly see the diffrence between GSM and CDMA instead of hearing it from other people
...
I *personally* think the sound quality is better on CDMA. Data speeds are better depending on where you live. Battery life definately goes to the GSM folks though, CDMA battery life sucks.
...
😁
thanks for all the input guys/gals, my decision to start this topic was not for the reason of starting a CDMA/GSM war. It sole purpose was to see different points of view on the subject. I am now convinced that with all the emerging technology, I should stay with GSM and just wait for the next best thing. Yeah 2010 may be a long ways away, but who's to say a neat surprise from the oh so long awaited Tmobile network will pop-up next year and dominate all others. CDMA is going in the right direction -------> blazing straight into the future of mobile broadband, but with the rest of the world developing GSM technology, its hard to believe its in it for the long run.
...
But, if you got a Sprint phone next year you could enjoy WiMax for 2 years and just when your contract is ending you could move back to AT&T and their LTE network (assuming it is up and running where you are and it is better than WiMax). 🙂
Just another Sprint FanBoy's opinion!
...
Well thats not a good decision. Like Mustang46L responded you could go for two years. But why would you do that? Remember that Sprint has a goal of full multimedia functionality on their handsets. Now look at a big supporters of WiMax. You have Samsung, which builds towers for WiMax's and his bro WiBro. You've got Microsoft which is focusing for full integration between mobile and home and multimedia "It looks like Microsoft is onboard the inclusive WIMAX ship, which is another significant blow to EVDO-monopolizing Qualcomm". You have Sanyo which makes great antenna's, like their MIMO antenna for the handset and they have great phones. Motorola and Intel who knows what will come from them. So you stay with your GSM if you want, but just to ...

You forgot Intel. http://www.intel.com/netcomms/technologies/wi max/index.htm
...
No, I did say Intel. I just haven't read much about Intel so dunno whats coming from thier end. Thanks for the link!!
...
The link doesn't work??
...
Just Google "WiMax Intel" it is the first link.
...
quote"So you stay with your GSM if you want, but just to let you know the most of the world is going to WiMax."
where do you get your info?
Source please. what world do you live in cuz maybe this country goin with Wimax but not world.
...
WiMax means: World Interoperability for Microwave Access
Well just a couple sources, Samsung.com, Wiki.com, WiMax.com, Microsoft.com, Here Ill give you a direct link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimax
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Deployed_WiMAX_ ... »And I read a recent press release that states the European government and some Asain governments are funding Wimax deployments.
...
WiMax is going to be more widely accepted than GSM I think, but isn't going to be a blowout.
Thankfully some big players (Nokia, Moto, HTC) are invested heavily in WiMax though so maybe we'll see some decent handsets on this side of the pond.
...
Oh, guess I can't read.
...
Going to wimax, for their Internet of course.
...
I agree with bnp ill stay with GSM but get a CDMA phone either from Helio or Sprint. I never give up GSM 😁
...
Why? CDMA has better voice quality, better internet, live tv, satetillite radio, and the coverage is better where I am, and after reading all these posts and forums seem to have a better coverage area within the US. Also less dropped calls after connection.
...
from where i live, GSM has a better coverage than sprint. I'm not going to give up GSM even though CDMA has better coverage, i can stay at home to watch live tv, and i really dont care for radio(IMO). Also, im not exactly 18 yet 🤭
...
Well keep it in mind, I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed. Especially because your 16 and into technology. I have been into tech since I was 11 thats why I've become a Sprint fan. They are the only company looking into the future and have a goal to reach. I became a Samsung fan quickly in 1999 when they had a big change in management and operations. I knew they would grow into what they are now because of SK huge growth in Internet use and gaming. Samsung sat their with RAM chips and soaked in profits.
...
well i've been introduced into Technology for almost half of my life. I got my first cellphone when i was 12 with AT&T and that's how i became a Sony Ericsson Fan. Hopefully ill get more into cellphones in the near future when i get older and wiser. 😁
...
well not really a SE fan but they have good phones
...
I have only sold their entry level phones and the interface and buttons suck. I have not seen a high end phone an am not particularly impressed by Sony anymore. They copy to many people and began as a reverse engineering company. They copied Microsoft with the HDD in the game system and 2 separate versions of the ps3, they copied Nintendo with the motion sensors in the controllers. Other than that I loved the Trinitron and the ps2 did well, but that was the end of their reign.
...
swordfight swordfight swordfight
...
yeah thats about the only benefit to GSM...and I would prolly never switch phones that much so its a non issue for me.
THe benefits of CDMA far outweight any percieved drawbacks.
