...that Sony Ericsson is fourth ahead of LG. When did that happen? Did it occur with just the most recent reports and has it been that way for a while?

LG and SonyEric generally stay in very close vicintity of each other's market shares.. i think sony eric took over the no4 once their cybershot and walkman brands took off (so I wld say for the last 2-3 quarters)

I agree, I would have guessed that LG would definetly be ahead of SE.

The Cybershot brand is an awesome handset, but it's not yet available through either of the 2 GSM carriers in the U.S.!!!!

Well in the US, only ATT sells SE, I think they have some exclusive with them.

Actually, SunCom still uses SE phones in the US, so.... no, ATT does not have exclusivity....

Right, no AT&T exclusivity. There's been a multi-year fued between SE and TMo USA ☚ī¸

Well, most phone makers sell primarily elsewhere. Let's face it, the US is pretty much a third-world country when it comes to wireless.

I think Sony Ericsson owes much of their success to their willingness to have a completely different business structure than any of their competitors. Unlike Motorola, Samsung or LG, SE (as a joint venture, that is) is completely focused on wireless. And unlike Nokia, who is also completely wireless, SE is completely private, so they don't have to worry about appeasing shareholders. They can focus on profitability, rather than also have to worry about market share. Thus they can focus on putting out the handsets that they want.

well Nokia almost has a controlling stake in
Nokia-Siemens NW (which also is probably mostly wireless, but yet they are not a pure cell phone play)

While SonyEric might not be a direct public co, they are owned 50-50 by their 2 public parents.. so the pressure would be pretty much almost the same as a public company (since the parent's shares do move when SE gives out its results)..hence making it a psuedo-public co itself

I think part of the problem is AT&T/Cingular does not always want to be innovative when it comes to the handsets they offer. I find most of their good handsets they get [except for b'berry's] are at least 6 months after they are released. But since they are the biggest GSM carrier they can afford to do it.

Also SE and TMo USA have been feuding the last few years so no SE phone with TMo USA but supposedly that will change as SE is reportedly working on a 1700mhz 3g phone for them.

In my last 5 handset I have owned an ericsson and 4 se phones. They have always been great for me. Before that I had nokia's but that was old AT&T TDMA.

Wow, you've been living a wireless life for a long, long time! I didn't get my 1st cell phone until Jan. of 2002, but then again, I'm only 27.

I do have a really old Motorola TDMA handset, heck, I just view it as a antique, a collctor's item.

I'd like to get a few other older phones, just to mark the evolution of the wireless industry, like what handsets looked like every 5yrs or so.

Another of AT&T/Cingular's problems has been their insistence on adding their own software to phones. I know that's definitely been the case with certain Nokia phones, like the 6230 and the 6682. If you got unbranded versions they worked great. But if you bought the ones that Cingular had put their software in, you encountered all kinds of problems.

Hell At&t has a lot to worry about. According to Forbes.com for every penny they earn they lose 3 pennys. Two months in a row they were on a beware of list. They suggest nobody invest in them. Wow thats funny for all the At&t fans out there. And with the iphone and all I figured it would be better.
