1- Why doesn't T-Mobile gobble up these small rural carriers such as Suncom, and the rest so they can expand their coverage?

2-How long before AT&T buys all and becomes bankrupt? They keep paying serious cash just to beat T-Mobile at exclusives, and by buying small carriers.

I don't know why T-Mobile just sits there watching AT&T move ahead of them.

I dont understand either. It would seem like Tmobile would be jumping for this. tmobile is starting to be a very passive company being last at everything. If they want to make it they need to start thinking for the future. And I still dont understand how the FCC and the gov is allowing ATT to buy as many corporation as they please. Its like going back to the 80's when ATT was this huge company before the FCC broke them up. And there debt is well over 100 billion dollars. It will take decades to pay off that debt.

Well, T-Mobile isn't last at everything, they're first at UMA in the United States.

The FCC doesn't regulate trade, the FCC regulates frequencies licenses whether wired or wireless with terrestrial networks, and content carried.

The DoJ still has to approve these buyouts...and they haven't turned one down yet.

True, Department of Justice and the Security and Exchange Commission handles antitrust/monopoly stuff, not the FCC.
I wonder if it's because both departments have HUGE accounts with AT&T/Cingular for their BlackBerry Enterprise service?? 😉

Yeah, the DoJ has an active role, but not the FCC in mergers and acquisitions.

I have to admit that I'm a bit miffed that T-Mobile wasn't able to buy Dobson. However, we have to remember that T-Mobile recently spent a grip of dough on spectrum to improve their data network. While it can be frustrating to hear about the other GSM carrier purchasing regional after regional, it seems to me that T-Mo is being somewhat more fiscally responsible. I can live with that.

Actuatlly, now that I'm thinking about it...I can just imagine...

It would be interesting for T-Mobile to be with AT&T, but it won’t happen.

it won’t. There will be excessively many players with excessively much market share for the FCC to allow this. it will be a global powerhouse though, but it won’t happen.

No, I don't think it would happen either, but just the sound of AT&T&T Mobile is funny...

T-Mobile is also looking to utilize their new spectrum for voice services as well. The other major carriers are so concerned with high-speed data, and I think T-Mobile wants to head them off with stellar call quality and reception.

Also, T-Mobile's strategy is to provide coverage where the population is most centralized. They're not too big on covering every inch of the U.S. It's not necessary.

Yea I actually agree with you. I think that T-mobile should have bought out DCEL to allow for an expansion in coverage area, but again, $5.1 billion with the assumption of debt, is a lot of money to spend on any carrier especially T-mobile who spent Billions during this past AWS auction and they will obviously spend billions more in capital expenditures. I think it would have been a good idea to buy DCEL especially with their infrastructure, but that figure is a lot of money even for AT&T who will seek $2.5 B in synergies from the deal.
1. Mentioned this a bit but it is hard for T-mobile to spend money on everything especially since they bought a lot of AWS spectrum. I think they should start looking at other little guys to see if they can...

I wonder how much debt is At&T in after all of the acquitions. Do anyone have a link to this information. I know it has to be over $100 billion. But one thing for sure when Suncomm sell they better buy them out or so many people are going to be disapointed. Tmobile needs to be in the Carolinas. They just need to buy it and fix it up to tmobiles standard.

We might have to wait a little bit to find out exactly what AT&T’s debt load is but according to march 31st 2007 quarter they have current liabilities of $34B and long term debt of $56B. On July 24 their 2nd quarter earnings so we would know a lot more. (http://www.att.com/gen/investor-relations?pi d=1121)

With regarding T-Mobile, it is difficult to purchase all of these rural companies because the money they think to spend on it will not be worth it that is why they have not been making purchases. It looks like they want to grow organically.

Because being the largest company in the nation isn't the same as being the most profitable company in the nation maybe?

I was raised in Alaska, and I can tell you right now that cell companies do not make money in most rural parts of the nation. Towers are expensive to put up and then maintain, and even when the equipment works, the signal still has to be shunted through ancient land lines that weren't designed for the bandwidth that's being forced down them. All of these little technical hurdles, combined with difficult topography (mountains, trees, rolling hills etc) make coverage and call quality spotty at best, leading to a high customer dissatisfaction rate.

All this snowballs and creates a market where your most expensive custo...
