Dude, they paid millions of dollars for that sponsorship. Why would they want to allow another telecommunications company to advertise? If AT&T has a problem with it they can outbid Sprint for the next sponsorship and ban Sprint from having a car.

Because it's productive to have more sponsors. That would be like when AT&T was sponsoring American Idol them saying that Verizon or Sprint couldn't run commercials...
And if AT&T did out bid them, they wouldn't ban other telcos from being a sponsor.

No, that isn't true. FOX runs AT&T commercials during EVERY race. That is different.

It would be like putting up Sprint signs on the Idol stage during the show.. Running ads is fine, that is up to the company running the show.

I think its more a problem of ATT (well Cingular) spending millions on the car....

What they are saying is its ok for SPRINT (Nextel) to do it but not ATT (Cingular)

Okay, I don't know if you realize it or not but Sprint (Nextel) paid millions of dollars for the sponsorship name...not the rights to ban other tlecos from sponsoring drivers.

What Sprint is doing about the AT&T name change is just ridiculous and petty. Now with this, they're putting a huge target on their back and basically shouting to the world that they're a company based on hypocrisy.

AT&T will counter-sue. Don't doubt that for a second.

To clarify...AT&T sued Sprint/Nextel and NASCAR for the rights to change their name during a rebranding stage of their new name. They were not entering a new sponsor into the sport and only wished to change their legally changed name. That is why they were allowed. Verizon is not allowed to enter into sponsorship into the Nextel/Sprint Cup series due to the "exclusivity rights" in the original contract with Nextel. Even with this change they couldn't enter. Just ask Robby Gordon who was ordered to remove Motorola logos from his car when Nextel cried "they're a competitor((even though thats who makes their phones((reason was his busch team was partnered motorola and VZW)))). Alltell has no grounds for any type of suit in this matter as they a...

The ability to change the sponsorship name from Nextel to Sprint, was mentioned earlier this season, stating that when the contract was wrote, Nextel had the ability to change its name 1 time over the course of the 10 yr contract to follow up with the above statement.

Did you miss the part where NASCAR just sued AT&T for changing Burton's car? 🤨

What all of you are missing is the facts of the contract that was mentioned involving the deal between Nextel, Nascar, current wireless sponsors, and future changes.

What was said, Is all current wireless sponsors would be allowed to keep the sponsorship, but would not allow any new wireless sponsors, or any RENAMING, which is what AT&T is doing.

That was what was said during last race.

But it probably needs to be mentioned that although the agreement prevents renaming, the fact still is that NASCAR's teams are independent contractors. If the teams were franchised, NASCAR's rules about sponsorship would be able to stick. This is probably why AT&T sued and was given the injunction. Personally, I don't really think there's a huge problem if a competitor to a series sponsor sponsors individual cars. I really think when RJ Reynolds sponsored the series, the competing tobacco companies really weren't interested in challenging NASCAR's clauses, but now that NASCAR is as popular as it is, I think you will see more challenges to silly rules. Really, it is silly if you think a company that changes its name shouldn't be allowed ...

You are correct in saying its silly, but on the other hand, look at what Sprint Nextel has done for the series since they took over. They have pretty much put you in the drivers car, given everyone the possiblity to see the other side of the sport, and the last thing i would want is to see is another wireless provider advertising on what i have millions of dollars invested in. So it might be silly, but its alot of money too.
