Still no 3G

YouTube is nice and all, but I still think releasing a $600 cell phone with Edge is a little silly. Of course, I'm not their target audience. I'm sure they will sell out on hype alone.

What choice did they have? ATT/Cingular's 3G coverage is still not good. ☹️

EDGE sucks, but at least it's everywhere.

what does that have to do with his statement? a phone can have hsdpa and fall back on edge. it's just dumb to make a $600 2g device for a company that has a 3g network.

Perhaps they figured that AT&Tingular's limited 3G coverage didn't warrant the added cost or lower battery life of including it for now.

Also, they get to sell you a second iPhone when the 3G one comes out later. 😳

This is why they didn't put out with 3G, because the battery will die early when it is constantly trying to switch between EDGE and 3G.

We know they have the technology because the iPHONE v2 is already in the works for Europe.

If you ever made you own 3gp video files for your phone, you would know that the frame rate is low and the video is choppy... if you want see what I mean, check out mobile youtube at m.youtube.com. The videos aren't as good as other formats available on other carriers such as Sprint mobile TV where you can even get full movies on demand.

Who cares about 3G compatibility? I'll just connect wirelessly when I want to crank down big files and/or Youtube vids. Besides, wireless connectivity is far more pervasive than 3G.

Find something meaningful to whine about.

Did you read the last post? Or are you confused by the difference between mobile broadband and wireless internet? He was talking about connecting to a wireless router, not using the carrier's data plan.

I think the confusion is in the terminology used. "wireless" is a generic term that can be applied to both cellular and WiFi. The poster meant it as WiFi, but its easy to see how someone could be cunfused.

I don't look at a phones wireless connection if it has to be wifi to be broadband. The only thing that should matter is the cellular connection. I can download large videos on my phone anywhere I'm at and don't have to worry about wifi hotspots. In my opinion, having to connect to a hotspot is a horrible business decision.

Unless your TMob and you own hotspots, then it's a great idea cause you get dolla dolla bills twice.

I would rather have 3G or 3.5G in this product but having WiFi is a nice feature. There are tons of free and open WiFi locations through out the world. I don't think 3G can touch 54mbps (where available).

Who said anything about Edge? Read the specs of the phone... It'll auto-connect to wireless if it's available. In a town like, say, San Francisco, you'll have faster than 3G connects just about everywhere you go.

There are wireless hotspots literally everywhere.

Pretty funny watching people complain about shortcomings of the phone when they are so badly informed about what it's capable of. Does it really hurt so bad to read the feature list?

Check out most major cities... San Francisco, yes, does have a lot of hotspots, but look at others. LA, Memphis, Chicago and others have a very small (and I'm looking at the free ones) hotspot coverage. You can google it if you like.

Yeah what is the deal with LA? Time Warner sucks balls at high speed too so LA is just a black hole for high speed, unless you're running fiber...

No, there's not. If you live in a big city, sure, there's a lot of them, but many of them are passworded/not free. And if you're away from the city, what're you gonna do... perform a WiFi raindance? 😳

WiFi's nice. It isn't any real substitute for 3G. Apple is hypnotizing you. Snap out of it.

I live in a small, east coast town. I turn on my laptop and see 7 wireless hotspots (thanks, neighbors) 4 of which are unpassworded.

If you can't find a hotspot you aren't trying. There's a hell of a lot more of them here than 3G coverage.
