So who's going to carry the K850? Is it going to take Cingular a year after release to get it in their stores like what happened with the W810?

since it's not compatible with t-mobile's 1700 mhz 3G band. but we can't guarantee that until cingular actually announces it.

Persobally, I don't trust Cingular, I think this handset is way, way, TOO GOOD for Cingular, it seems as though they go out of they're way not to get the better handsets.

Hey Eric, let me ask'ya something though.

Since it is tri-band HSDPA, I wouldn't have any problems accessing Cingular's Medianet, or sending/recieving MMS's on this UNLOCKED handset would I?

Cause I heard unlocked Nokia handsets can automatically detect medianet settings from Cingular network over the air. And since Cingular carries SE also, I would think the same would apply.

On SE's site, on a page like this http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc= en&ver=4000&template=ps1_1_1_1&zone=ps&lm=ps1 _1&pid=10745 you can put in your info and get the settings sent to you via a SMS.

I had no idea it was THAT easy!!! Thanks.

Yeah, this K850 certainly seems attractive, though there seems to be a bit of confusion.

Reports say it is quad band GSM, and tri band HSDPA, but SE's website says tri band GSM and tri band HSDPA.

I thought to myself why the heck would they have 850 HSDPA, but not 850 GSM, that just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

If you do have trouble accessing medianet then you can contact customer care at 1-866-246-4852 assuming you are a customer they will provide you with the information and how to enter it in the medinet settings to allow you to access it.

Even on my Sharp V903, MediaNet settings would work even on my handset??? That would be so, so, so nice!!!

Just because you do not buy the handset through them does not mean you cannot use medianet.

Does not have quad band GSM. Only GSM 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 850/1900/2100. Phonescoop reported wrong. Check out the official specs here:

Just to follow up on this subthread. The specs have been updated on their web site to what was reported in press release. Yes 850 GSM exists on this device.

Just like EVERY top-end phone that is released overseas, it will likely NOT be picked up by a carrier. Buy it unlocked unbranded.

Such a long time 😢

Indeed. I wish SE would get their act together and either change their news release or their specs page so we can get the real story on whether the phone supports GSM 850 or not... I have a feeling it does not however, as on multiple sites, the phone is listed as having UMTS 850 and not GSM 850. The only place GSM 850 is listed is on the press release page. 😳 ☹️

Also, unlocked, I betcha it'll cost quite a bit, perhaps as much as $549!!!

Personally, I'm not willing to spend any more than $500 @ the most. That's how much I paid for my Sharp V903 14 months ago.

Yeah it will be costly but with the specs it seems worth it to me [then again we don't have a price yet].

Yeah, well, just a prediction, but $500 is the most I'm willing to pay for any handset.

I'm pretty patient when it comes to upgrading, I haven't been locked into a contract with Cingular since October of 2005, been month-to-month ever since.

But I would like to get a new handset between now and February, that way I would qualify for an equipment upgrade when things get REALLY eXciting @ the end of the decade in the wireless industry. I really believe things'll change fast as we get closer to the end of the decade, 2010-2011.

By the way, I think Rich and Eric should consider setting up some sort of instant messenging feature on the website, cause there a times that some of us go back and forth, and back and forth, heck, that would be...

Yeah $500 sound like a good guess. Maybe if Cingular actually gets it in its lineup it could be less. Another reason I might go to Cingular. I keep buying my phones unlocked because I do not like the phones TMo has. I wish they would stop feuding with SE.

Oh and I totally love the im/chat idea. My F5 [refresh] button is going to break today 🤣

I agree. Only the first phone I had with AT&T TDMA was bought from a carrier. But if you go to one of these carrier independent mobile shops [we have them all over nyc] and sign up for a plan you can usually get an unlocked phone but get a break on the price since they carriers give them incentives for signups.

Jun 14, 2007, 5:24 PM
Well the break isn't big like you get if you buy direct from a carrier. Maybe like $50-$100, but since I have been with TMo for so long I have only gotten that break the first time. Back when I bought my Ericsson T39M.

T-Mo 3G (affectionately termed T3), which runs on the 1700 band, is hardly rolled out anywhere. It doesn't matter, by the time 1700 is widespread, we'll see another SE phone supporting it.

My point exactly. People will be using this phone on ATT ;) whether Cingular likes it or not.

I for one will be staying with TMo until I can get my hands on this phone 😁

I'll be with T-Mo on this phone (because AT&T coverage SUCKS in Arizona). I just won't have 3G data, which is fine.

And for what reason can you not use this handset on Tmo also? It is a GSM handset, all you gotta do is put your Tmo sim card in there, you should know that.

I don't understand why you can't use it on Tmo, it can be used on EITHER Cingular or Tmo.

I have an unlocked phone (Sharp V903)

To both you Jayshmay and you mongoos150, I do want 3G data at some point. Figure this is a good phone to get me there and that means Cingular unless TMo really gets it's @ss in gear.

I love TMo. The coverage is good where I am [NYC] and it's really cheap. I would have like 1/3 the minutes with Cingular for the same price. I am not sure I can wait for their 3G though.

Ok, perhaps less minutes, but in time, you can rack up Rollover minutes, I've got somewheres around 2,300 rollover minutes, I am on a 1400 minute plan, and have my mother on my account, 1400 minutes with 2 lines is $90/mo

$39.99, 1000 anytime minutes, free nights & free weekends. For me Cingular can't beat that, rollover or not. Neither can Sprint/Verizon/Alltel/etc.

I've had the plan for many many years, but they just recently re-introduced it when they up'd the minutes to their plans.
...
Jayshmay

Jun 14, 2007, 5:15 PM
Yeah, mighty good deal!!! Last I heard of that rate plan was you get 1000 minutes for $40/mo, or I think as many as 1500 for $50, BUT, my understanding was no N&W minutes, your anytime minutes, and N&W minutes were one group.

At least that was my understanding.

By the way, it seems to me as though a lot of young people favor T-Mobile. Could it be because it is easier to get approved by them with little credit history? It just seems to me as though younger people prefer Tmo.

Yeah, TMo takes anyone and everyone. Good credit, bad credit, no credit...

I picked them because they were the only gsm carrier by me. Actually they were voicestream for a while when I first started with them like 6 years ago.

Wow, 6yrs. You've got a little bit on me.

I've been with Cingular since Jan.'01, 5 and a half years. I really don't give it much though changing carriers neither.

Though I am having a little trouble adjusting to this whole name change thing with AT&T, ah heck, I like the name Cingular!!!

AT&T is horrid in Arizona - which is why I'm switching to T-Mo. Everyone I talk to loves it, there's big time brand loyalty with T-Mo. Also highest in customer satisfaction... they must be doing somethin' right.
