Why this phone won't matter

This is just my opinion and guesses:

1) It will be purchased by the existing base more than the new customers. (Not as much growth as wanted)
2) A lot of people who purchase it would not subscribe to the MediaNet plan because of the WiFi. (Not as much data growth as wanted)

That's pretty much it. It will most likely be sold out and out of stock all over, but the question is how much data will Cingular gain, and how much increased voice revenue and subscribers will they gain?

I agree that there will probably not be that much more growth. But the will be making a lot of money with the price of the unit. As I understand Apple negotiated some sort of wierd concessions. I can't remember the details, but there is definately money to be made. Look at apple's stock as they announced the release date.

Normally, in the US the real money isn't made on the phone, but on the contract and the services. In this case, they are asking for an arm and a leg (and your first born for the 8GB model) for the unit.

I think you're saying the same thing. Apple will probably make a lot of money on this. AT&T...? Probably not so much.

3) With flash memory approaching 4-8 GB (the technology is there, it just has to get more affordable), the iPhone's music capabilities become less unique. Sure it works with iTunes, but that's about all that's noteworthy. With a 4 GB flash card, any PDA phone will perform similarly to the iPhone in terms of data usage, and any phone with a memory card slot (and the firmware to support 4 GB cards) can be used as a music player.

4) Indirect agents can't sell or service the iPhone. It has to be sold and service from ATT corprote locations or the Apple store. Not a big deal immediately, but when rural customers who buy their iPhones in the big cities can't go to their local retailer for service, they won't be happy. Plus, once the iPhone...

Actually PDA's will perform better. It's my understanding the iPhone will be on the Edge network, WiFi isn't a nicety, it's a requirement. It needs faster speeds to perform and isn't geared toward business users.

I think it will sell, but I think it will be a disappointment in the long run. The Razr was all the thing and now people freely admit it was crap. They wouldn't admit it when it first came out so much, but I think we'll see the same with the iPhone.

You obviously missed my point. I wasn't saying it wouldn't sell. I'm saying, it isn't going to be aiding AT&T gain as much as they hope they will.

Verizon had first dibs on the iPhone. They turned it down. That said, CDMA has less world wide support than GSM. Verizon said they didn't want to give up control of the device that Apple was seeking. I guess Steve didn't want to install the ugly red verizon UI on the iPhone. 😛

I think VZ saw what most in this thread are saying. It wasn't going to be a big money maker for them and it would probably be a pita to service. Not to mention that VZ offers insurance on all their phones. I would bet this will be treated by ATT just like their pdas meaning you can't buy insurance at any price. Imagine forking over 500-600 bucks for this on a new two year plan and then having it stolen or lost the second day you have it?
