As far as we know, the iPhone will not be available without a contract. At least initially. There is no word from Apple or AT&T what the monthly contract for the iPhone will cost. The TV adds explicitly state that a 2-yr contract is required.

For goodness sake! You cannot purchase the iphone without contract. It will require a 2 year activation or upgrade as everyone has been stating for months!

I heard different. That the price was going to be the same with or without a contract. But if that's how they want to do it, more power to them. I just thought they would be smarter than that since I would imagine the next generation iPhones would be out next year. Only speculation though.

ok the reason alot of people are thinking the same on the pricing is because if you sign a contract to get the phone you wont get a discount on the device. for ex. if you buy a n75 without a contract from att the retail price is $400. if you sign a 2yr contract the n75 is $200. Usually when you sign a contract you recieve about $100-$200 of the retail price. with the iphone you wont recieve any discount of the retail price when signing the contract, and you are unable to purchase the iphone without contract.

That is what has people thinking that the $100 to $200 subsidy may be going into the monthly cost. Otherwise, why have a contract at all? I will not sign a two year contract for anything less than $5,000 in value. A two year contract for a phone is a joke. I'm ready to spend my money on an iPhone but not if AT&T requires a two year contract.

Even normal phone subsidies are not always all that great when you look at the cost of getting out of a contract vs. buying an unlocked phone.

Yep!!! Good points!!! Besides, the whole idea of contracts I think shows lack of confidence in business models, if a perticular business was concerned about keeping customers happy, they'd keep coming back, but with a contract, happy, not happy, customers is forced to stay, I don't agree with that business model.

EARN a customer!!!

Cingular/AT&T allow you to cancell your contract and service with in 30 days of signing up. So whats stopping people from cancelling and keeping the phone. On a normal subsidized phone they charge back the full price of the phone if not returned. But since the Iphone is sold with a contract at a un-subsidized price, woulden't that technically mean they cant penialize you for not returning the phone, you paid for it after all? I mean what are they going to do charge you another 599$ I'd like to see them try that.
