From what I understand, the data service is required to get internet and all that and without this service the phone is pretty much an ordinary phone with a touch screen. Shouldnt the WIFI still work w/o the data service? I dont want to pay the extra money for data service when I can pick free wifi connection at school/home/work, and other places as well. I dont understand, someone please explain

You will need the data connection at first because you will need to activate a gmail account. After that from I guess you could cancel the data but why would you? If your going to get a top end phone you should be able to afford to run it. Thats like buying a nice car and pushing it because its free and you don't want to pay for gas. Don't cheap out on the data you won't like it.

i agree. i would suggest getting another phone because there are only a select amount of G1's available so its not really fair to the ones waiting in line early in the morning. hold off on getting it until they come out with more G1's. but if you're gonna get the data service, then more power to you

actually you will AWLWAYS need a data plan with this phone it WILL NOT function with out it. it will only let you make emergency calls ONLY. the phone can be unlocked but it useless to do so only works on a tmobile network.(so far).

don't worry tmobile is coming out with another touch screen with 5mp camera. looks alot like the iphone made by samsung might be better off waiting for that one. G1 was okay when i got it yesterday (in full 3g area) its still kinda slow. street view only works in some area not all. its not as recent as they say it to be more like a couple months to yr old. but its okay. only can use keyboard to text and that was a lil uncomfortable due the side buttons not being able to move with the screen. the phone was alright but for the money its asking for its not worth it. i'll wait for the other touch screen that soon to come in November.

Nope you have the choice to take the plan off. its like the sidekick you have to register it to the network. after that if you wanna use wifi you can. ENJOY

The phone won't work without a Google account, and I think that set-up step requires T-Mobile data service. I don't see a wi-fi option during that first step. You can't even power it up fully without a Google account set up and linked to it.
