we all know sprint has merger problems but sprint would have to force migrate every nextel customer to hybrids and do all CDMA calling if it was possible. what do you think?

then we would see dual band/iden hybrid phones!!!

They do not have to force anyone to the CDMA platform, but they would like to. By offering the dual mode devices and the Qchat sooner than later it will not force anyone but offer the customers choices if they would like to continue to use the PTT functionality. There is a big difference with forcing customers and offering solutions that would help. Forcing would be the Cingular and ATT Wireless merger as well as the TDMA to GSM situation that is currently going on. (Charging customers to use the TDMA network.)

Yea, that dual band would be better as it would allow 850/1.9ghz CDMA and then the 800 IDEN so it would be better on the capacity and coverage side, the problem is however, with regarding interference as well as battery but more im...

the only reason cingy started charging people to use TDMA is because it was a dying technology, nobody uses it anymore, there was nothing that TDMA offered that GSM didn't do better. and it would have been useless to continue offering service to customers when no decent cell phone manufacturer produces TDMA phones, besides cingular didnt force them over its just that staying with cingular was the BEST choice! 😎

that is def bogus! they made customers switch to gsm. I work for a big player in the indirect market for the phx metro area. we sold aws for years and about a year after the merger customers received letters in the mail telling them that they could no longer have tdma service and they either had to switch to gsm or leave cingy. I personally saw these letters.

In regards to your letters, I had one when I lived in Tampa. Apparently at the time, before the merger closed, Cingular didn't have enough spectrum in the market to run both TDMA and GSM effectively. Our letter stated a date, I think it was June 06, 2005, or something like that, in which GSM would be on and TDMA would be off. W...

to add to that, customers could have complained and had a credit given to their account to make up the time it takes to move all their phone numbers from the TDMA to the GSM phone, they even got to keep their tenure when they migrated over thus having that much more weight to throw around when their bill came

I realize the need.. I'm just tired of the holyer then now cingy and verizon reps that feel that their company's "do no wrong". Here in phx it makes sense bc cingy is by far the worst carrier. They took over the worst and last built network (AWS) here in the valley. They need the towers and spectrum to compete with the other 4 carriers. Pennyless said that people werent forced which is def not true bc I have proof.

the towers were too expensive to keep running, the technology was 20 years old, the plans were not comparable to the new plans so should cingular should have just forced everyone to let their equipment shoot craps on them and let them keep their plans with no equipment support?

The proof I have are the letters that were sent to the TDMA customers telling them that they could no longer keep their service even if their equipment still worked fine. Your earlier message stated that Cingy didnt force anyone to switch and I was merely pointing out the fact that they indeed were and I had the proof.

Yeah.......... You are right. My parents were on tdma with Cingular (AT&T). They sent a letter and told them that they had to come in and upgrade within 30 days to upgrade, or there phones would be turned off.

Yea, but they were forcing people as in sending letters and other means. That is Cingular’s problem when they will still selling TDMA and they should have suggesting to customers to switch but at a better way to say it and better pricing.
