Alltel Begins Serious Discussions For A Sale
What makes you think a carrier will buy?
If Qwest were smart they would try and move in for this one too. Lots of CDMA and spectrum for growth, and they could sell off towers and spectrum from the Alltel GSM network to T-Mobile and AT&T for GSM/UMTS expansion to cover the costs of the $30 billion purchase.
Qwest needs to make a bold move soon or they are going to get eaten up.
I've never heard of this but if you could show some proof I would stand corrected.
Even if they did at one time sell off a wireless division, it is not unheard of for a company to go back on a previous decision. In order to compete in tomorrow's market, companies are going to have to be able to offer the bundled packages like Verizon, AT&T and Qwest can.
And Comcast is in talks with Sprint as their mobile provider to launch a Quad-Play of media services.
Why a carrier would buy? Simple because of the consumer base and the spectrum that Alltel has. Alltel is continuing to see expansion in their markets while the other carriers not so much. There will also be synergies.
Comcast will not buy out Alltel, because it does not make sense. They have that JV with Sprint why would they need to spend $30B for Alltel when the JV is a lot cheaper than that.
A year ago, I think they were worthless, perhaps this year they are, but at least they are doing something right. I still think they will go chapter 11 before someone buys them.
