they're headed to areas of the world that don't need/can't afford the high end phones that we all crave.
i'll give you an example - in india (my family is from india so i've seen this first hand), middle class people, upper-mid class, and upper class people have servants in their house. because of the massive number of people in the country, labor is pretty cheap, so it's pretty common for people to have servants. It's also pretty common for these servants to be given a cell phone with strict limitations. My family's driver was given a phone with the outgoing call feature disabled. it's so that we can call him when we need him to pick us up from shops or restaurants or something. for that purpose, there's no reason to give him a Nok...

a monochrome screen isn't just a benefit in that it reduces cost, it's a benefit in that even a very low cost monochrome screen is easy to read out doors in the bright sun (like in india, brazil, africa, etc where these phones will be sold). it also requires much less power. and power is expensive and hard to come by in developing countries. think about it, how many times have you bought a mid range or even high end phone only to find you couldn't read it outdoors? or finally found one with a bright enough screen only to have the battery run down in two days? if all you're doing is making calls or texting, you have no need for a color screen.

don't get me wrong. they sell the high end stuff in the developing countries, to those who can afford it of course. last winter i was there and i bought a Sony Ericsson K800i for about $75 under what it would cost me here. but they still have a market and a demand for phones that aren't as high end as the K800i or the Nokia N73 (my 2nd choice at the time) or some of the other phones that we crave. Simple supply and demand. I gurantee they'll get more of the low end Nokias than they will get Nokia N95s or the like...
India, just like Brazil and parts of Africa and the rest of the developing world, have distinct social classes, and companies like Nokia and Sony Ericsson and Motorola will have to cater to all these social classes to obt...
