Depends, if you work for in the cellular industry, I can see your point, on the consumer end I can see our point. And this subsidizing the phone nonsense is just that, many industries subsidize sales, from sat tv, to playstation 3's. Because the mobile phone industry spent billions buying each other out and consolidating now want to recoup those costs doesn't mean they shouldn't be responsible. Then they went from a 1 year to 2 year contracts. More nonsense.

BTW wasn't Sprint who wanted to make out of Texas residentss pay for for their taxes through another fee on their bills? Thang goodness local states told them, no. I guess that government interference.

If you want to throw out contracts, then you're going to throw out subsidies. You mentioned other companies that have subsidized equipment without a contract, but all of your examples actually sold the product they manufactured. Cell phone companies sell their equipment to service providers at a premium (they make a phat profit), and service providers turn around and sell them at a loss. If you want things the another way, then you're going to have to cut out the middle man and have carriers stop selling phones all together. If cell carriers lose money on this, where do you think they're going to recoup those losses? Rate plans....Handset upgrade discounts getting less and less.....Higher monthly cost of optional features, etc...This is also going to open carriers up to customers lying about the problems they're having with their handsets just to cancel service without being charged a contract fee. Yet another reason why the manufacturer should be responsible and not the carrier.
