What's the point (for us consumers)

I know the point for Best Buy is to make money, but what about us? Why would anybody go to a Best Buy wireless store? The whole point of an indirect agent store is to provide a friendly personal atmosphere.

The point for us consumers is to give us more choices and lower prices. I have a good friend that currently works in the cell phone department for Best Buy, and he showed me how much lower Best Buy offers consumers phones than the regular Sprint, Verizon, and Cingular stores. For example, an "enV" phone at Best Buy was $99.99 last week and it is still $149.99 (after rebates) at the VZW store.

I think this is a great idea and cannot wait for them to open stores like this up across the United States.

And screw all the locally owned agents, eh?

Who are actually good at their jobs and very friendly. Whenever I can I go to a local indirect store. Sometimes I have to go to corporate one though.

Well...that could definitely be a problem.

It's weird though. I am not saying your friend is uneducated, because he's probably very smart. But at my local Best Buy, the reps don't know much at all. They had a Treo 700w on display and the battery was dead, so I told the person there that the battery was dead and that he should charge it. So he takes it in his hands and starts pressing random buttons to try to get it to turn on. I'm standing there like What is he doing? The "R" button isn't the power button...

That is all too often the case. That's precisely why this new store-in-a-store concept will replace that kind of neglected phone counter at your typical Best Buy.

This is a whole new effort, done in partnership with Carphone Warehouse, a very successful chain of cell phone stores in the UK. They're experts at selling phones the right way.

This will definitely put a crimp in the "Mom & Pop" type cell phone stores that are pretty prevalent.

Hey!!

Their will always be mall hustlers selling this or that. People need to stop thinking that Private owned stores and kiosk are shady. PEOPLE ARE SHADY!. Corporate, Best Buy and In-directs alike. I run 2 Kiosks. We provide Customer Service that is above and beyond what any Corporate or Best Buy can do. I also have many college kids working for us because our scheduling is very flexible.

Why would you want a good small business to fail? A business that currently provides 14 college students a good paying Part time job while they go to school. Just as many horror stories come out of corporate and best buy stores as do in-directs.

People that are shady are the ones that cause problems. Not the stores themselves.

Because most consumers aren't like you, they only care about getting phones at the cheapest possible price.

Best Buy isn't always that cheap. They are like everybody else. When VZW had the KRZR for $199, they had it for $49. But when VZW had the V325 for free, it was $69 there.

Best Buy: It's like WalMart but with carpet!

This is something new that will replace the phone displays at existing Best Buy locations. They've partnered with this British company to do it right and take it seriously, so you may see different pricing strategies than before.

Well hopefully they will. It look stupid when you have an electronics store and their reps are about as educated as the one at Wal Mart. Their Geek Squad isn't too impressive either.

Just another option. Sometimes the corporte store has the best price. Sometimes the web, and sometimes an indirect location. Though usually at my indirect we try and either match the corporate or online or offer rebates and sales on accessories to stay competetive.

It won't hurt our store too much. We have a pretty loyal customer base that has been coming to us for years.

I am a Wireless Expert (the one in the stores who does most of the activations) for Best Buy and honestly, I am excited.

I don't see much of a difference though, because in my store the cell phone is essentially a store within a store, just a different department, and it has mp3s with it.

Best Buy is a great alternative for cell phones because, at least in my store, they are hardly any waits. One of the biggest hassels is waiting an hour and a half to get a cell phone, whereas Best Buy is usually in and out within 25 minutes.

Pricing is also a bit better. Since we're not on commission, it seems as if our pricing is lower (i.e. the enV as someone stated) and the biggest thing to me is no mail in rebated. Best Buy rid themselves o...
