That is soooo 2005. 🙂

BTW, are there any devices announced yet that take advantage of the fabulously-designed T-Mobile 3G UMTS multi-frequency service that works nowhere else in the world except the US?

T-Mobile kinda needs to build a 3G network first. 😉 They're hard at work on it, but it takes serious time to build a whole new national network, with new antennas, equipment, and upgraded backhaul at each and every tower location!

That's a very simple question with a VERY complicated answer. 😳 Let me try to break it down....

First, 3G is a very broad term that can be used in many contexts. It can be used in a narrow way to refer to the type of WCDMA-based network that Cingular has, but more commonly it means any network that provides broadband-like data speeds... which means the EVDO networks offered by Sprint and Verizon are, in fact, 3G.

Cingular's 3G network is based on WCDMA with HSDPA, which provides data rates up to 1.8 Mbps for phones, which is decent.

Sprint and Verizon offer EVDO Release 0 for phones, which tops out at 2.4 Mbps. A little faster, but nothing dramatic.

But wait... Cingular's network actually supports a faster version of HSDPA that...

Last thing I heard was 4th quarter '07 roll out, full immersion by 4th quarter '08.

Things do change however like the return of "Take Control" in the 2nd quarter.

It has nothing to do with how it was designed. T-Mobile didn't have a choice; the 1700 band is all the FCC was offering for sale. The FCC didn't have a choice; everything else was taken. Using the new 1700 band is the only way T-Mobile could get enough new spectrum to launch a 3G network at all. More info here:

The first device announced for the 1700 band it is the Motorola Q9h:
