CDMA and GSM are screwed

It's all going to be over when wimax comes it seems. It's less money to set up wimax than cdma or gsm. Foreign countries will have Wimax set up before Cingular gets this country in 3G...

how is CDMA screwed? it is common knowledge that Sprint is slated to launch WiMax next year, and it is already launched in Chicago. Can't wait for it to be launched here in Baltimore.

Wimax is not CDMA technology. Meaning sprint will be changing there service to Wimax. CMDA is screwed especially for verizon. If verizon stays with CDMA and Cingular and TMobile with GSM they are going to be in a world of hurt.

i work for sprint, they are keeping the CDMA for voice, the WiMax is the next step for data and you will be seeing more dual mode cdma/wimax handsets.

and with qualcomm buying out the wimax developers, you will see verizon migrating over to wimax technology as well. it will just be a matter of time (probably 2010)

Yeah it's just a shame that American can't be the first for this. Every other country has superior phones and networks. I think india will be all wimax before us.

i am not too sure about that, cuz i remember seeing bill gates using wimax at some trade show, not exactly sure where it was, but it was domestically.

as i said, they are launching wimax in the MD/DC area early 2008, and actually they are ahead of schedule.

what area are you in?

i live in massachusetts. Actually i'm in the process of getting out of verizon for free. Because i recently moved and verizon has limited service here. So i'm probably going to go with cingular and the iphone when it comes out.

waste of money. the iphone does not support 3g services. how is sprint coverage up there?

yeah i know the iphone doesn't have 3G i'm thinking maybe they may slip it in. The free wifi is what i really like. Especially if you can use jaha or skype to make calls. I live in the middle of some towers, but it seems CDMA is crap in this area. Hence that is probably why there is a cingular store around the corner. I've had verizon for like 5 years. I don't think i'll jump to sprint until there wimax is fully out, which could be in a couple of years. Who knows by them we may be able to make phone calls with our minds haha...

ask a few of your buddies to see who they have. personally i dont think the iphone will be worth what they are charging. you are probably better off buying a pimp ass unlocked phone off of ebay and just get the free phone with cingular if you do make the jump.

It's definetly going to be expensive. Have to see how the reviews are and what craps out on it the first week. I"m a mac guy. But it's a steep price. I do like the idea of having an SIM card which is cool and i could use an unlocked phone. Verizon and sprint should have done that. I'm hoping maybe nokia will come up with something really. N95 is nice but it's even more expensive than the iphone. I mean the Iphone how do you drive and have to constantly look at the phone, it's not tactile. I"m wondering how that is going to work as well if there is going to be a new kind of voice interprtation for itunes with bluetooth, so you don't have to take your phone out of your pocket. Guess I'll see.

If I still had cingy, I would probably rock one of the N-Series phones. I have always liked nokia gsm, however nothing stateside has captivated my interest for gsm.

I have sprint and couldnt be happier. I have the m1.

Yeah nokia does have a great OS system. It's a shame our country is so crappy with technology. I just think people don't get it. There is small margin of people who want a phone to do everything and do it well. Most people just don't give a **** as long as it dials. I'm going to wait till june and see if cingular comes out with something good. Now if they can only get rid of these friggining contracts you have to sign your life away too.

Yeah, all our technology is worthless. We should probably dump our miniaturized PDA's and computers capable of wireless broadband immediately.

Diz does have a point. The U.S. is known for globally for having terrible wireless coverage. I mean, when it comes down to it, there actively 6 technologies in use: AMPS, TDMA, GSM, CDMA flavors, WCDMA, and iDEN.

Most countries have two: GSM and WCDMA.

I know it's all migrating to GSM/CDMA/WCDMA/WiMax/iDEN... in the U.S., but still a huge mix. And a lot of times it's coverage for one technology is just "overlaid" on the coverage area of a different technology, which may have a different optimized tower sequence for best coverage.

It should be noted that Qualcom only bought WiMax assests of TeleCIS, this doesn't mean the will be the exclusive chipset manufacturer for WiMax chips. Samsung is the vendor providing the equipment for the test market in the BaWa area and Intel is doing so for the Chicago market.

As far as Bill Gates eyeing up WiMax, that was at the Consumer Electronics Show that took place back in January out in Las Vegas. He likes the standard because it's a step towards his "internet everywhere" vision, having every appliance and electronics device hooked up to the internet communicating with one another.

omg this isnt the same wimax.... get over it. look at the comparison:

For now, Clearwire focuses on what's known as fixed WiMAX, which provides high-speed Internet access in fixed locations—say, a home or an office building—rather than over a mobile phone or a device used in a train or car. Consultancy Parks Associates expects 4 million Americans to use wireless broadband technologies like WiMAX for Web access by 2010.

sprint plans on deploying mobile wimax which is capable of handling comcast speeds. research it sometime. mobile wimax has better building penetration and since sprint is depoloying a larger wimax then fixed wimax on its ce...
