...how many Japanese-US residents are there? Are there enough to support an MVNO's initial expense?

I highly, highly doubt it.

There aren't enough Japanese-Americans who would use the service to make a Japanese-only market reasonable.

However, when you account for the VAST number of American kids who love anything and everything Japanese (think about all of those kids who get their anime hoodies and things at Hot Topic) and then the actual Chinese and Korean customers who will be marketed to in the next few years, this seems like a very profitable idea.

I'd choose to integrate a vietnamese interface in some areas as well, but there definitely aren't enough Vietnamese people in the country yet to make that too profitable nationwide.
